I stayed at Hotel Abba for 4 nights... It was one of the cheapest options that I found in Amsterdam. Of course I didn´t have great expectations about the place, but still it was disapointing.
I had to carry my luggage through the stairs since they have no elevator. The room was not very clean, there were some bugs inside and sheets were dirty. On the second day they didn´t even change our towels... and there was no toilet paper in the bathroom. When we were leaving for dinner we went to the reception and asked to put some toilet paper there. The answer was: "I´m all by myself here now, so we will put some toilet paper tomorrow"...
Location is good. Breakfast acceptable.

Not so clean (sheets were a bit dirty). There was no light in the bathroom. Had to go down the stairs carrying my bag without any help.
First time I had to use my own sheet in a hotel.
This is not a hotel. It is quite a hostel.

We were very disheartened by the prices of Amsterdam hotels in general. However, having spent 4 nights at the Hotel Abba, we're wrapt to have found a very nice & clean place in a top location and at a very reasonable price given Amsterdam standards.

The staff were very courteous and attentive, and very helpful when we tried to extend (and then unextend) our stay there. The room was very clean and complete with ensuite, and we were also surprised to learn that they offered a free breakfast as well.

The location is great - just a short walk from Leidseplein, and also above a supermarket and ATM machine. There is also a tram stop right outside the front door, that leads to Centraal station.

We were very happy with this find, and would not hesitate recommending this place to others looking for value for money accommodation in a city that isn't too cheap to stay in!

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the first floor (so you don't have to trudge up lots of steep stairs!)

Stayed last week in Abba for 4 nights and liked a lot.

It was hard to choose an accommodation in Amsterdam on a budget and trying to look for location, breakfast and good feedback. Abba was our choice.

Arrived at Schippol on a Wednesday close to midnight.
Took bus N97 to Amsterdam and got out near Leidseplein (there is an electronic sign inside the bus that always shows the next stop), precisely at Stadhouderska, between Overtoom and Leidseplein. Beware that bus N97 runs from hour to hour at that time.
Ticket cost: 4€/pax
Trip time: 20 minutes

A couple like us (mid 30´s) with a trolley each walked with no problems to Abba at that time. Less than 500 meters.

Warned Abba in the eve by email that we probably will be arriving late in the night, they answered that there were no problem with that, just ring the bell and someone were there. We were received by a nice man who gave us the keys, asked for payment and gave us all info needed.

No elevator and the stairs are in fact a bit of a challenge but nothing the average person cannot handle. Could be impossible to injured or handicap people or, of course, under the effects of alcohol or hash :)

Checked in at room 11 on the 3rd floor concerning that reception is on the 1st one. The room had a double bed as requested, 2 bedside tables, phone, fan, a table near window with 2 chairs, closet and TV with CNN,BBC and lot more. All that and a ensuite bathroom as requested too.

Room view to Overtoom. Early morning and early evening could be a bit noisy but the window is good and void much of the street sounds.

Breakfast were served between 08-10am on 1st floor. They had 3-4 types of bread, butter, jams, boiled eggs, milk, coffee, 2 types of cereals, orange juice, cheese, ham, salami, toaster and good fresh fruit. I´ve seen them replacing what´s missing even shortly before 10am.

Desk staff were nice and helpful. Check out is at 11am but if you have a later flight you can leave your luggage there.

No free wifi, you must pay it (3€ by 1hour if i recall). Half way to Leidseplein you find a shop in Overtoom who makes it 1,5€/hour. Even better is going to Starbucks at Leidsestraat (first block after Leidseplein) and get it for free :)

They changed towels every day (bath towels only). Cleanliness was not so good but we could handle it cause we only were there to sleep on a budget. There is no shampoo but you can find it all you need at the Albert Heijn (Supermarket) downstairs and an ATM machine too.

Two blocks walk to Vondelpark, 10 minutes to Leidseplein, 20 to Dam if you are a walk lover, if not who have a tram stop right in front of the hotel.

Going back to Schippol was easy, for 4€ we took bus 197 right in front of Hotel Amsterdam Centre in Nassaukade (in Overtoom towards Leidseplein make a left when it ends). On a Sunday past lunch time we took a 30 minute trip.

In overall was better than i thought. If they improved cleanliness a bit and make it free wifi, i consider it a hidden gem... but it seems we´ll have to wait :)

Thank you Abba!

Room Tip: you can ask for expresso at breakfast!

I was staying in this hotel in May 2011. Everything was great, madraces were great, everything was clean, stuff was pleasant and location is great, about 10-15 minutes of relax walking to the Dam square... I am coming back there next time for sure! Only thing missing is the internet connection.
