We enjoyed a two night weekend stay in the three-star Prinsengracht, well located on the N side of the eponymous canal, close to plentiful public transport and within walking distance of most of what a visitor will want to see in Amsterdam. The hotel is a conversion of two elegant 17c townhouses and enjoys classic views across the canal and a spacious back garden with seating.
We were a party of three, including a young teenager, and were allocated a top floor room with a large sofa bed. The room was compact but comfortable, with a sloping roof and a good canal view through dormer windows. The feeling would be claustrophobic for a long stay but it was adequate as a weekend base. The (shower only) bathroom would be rated four star except for poor toiletries. There was a fan but no air-conditioning, not a problem in September but potentially an issue during the summer.
Breakfast was a simple buffet in the reception area, a somewhat crowded experience. The hotel also offers a limited snack and drinks menu
WiFi was free, fast and simple to use. The (few) staff we met were helpful and friendly.
The main negative was the room rate of c. €300 per night, much more than we expect to pay in a three-star hotel and reflecting the high demand and limited supply of hotel rooms in Amsterdam’s inner centre. However, breakfast and extras were good value.
Overall, a pleasant if expensive experience.
