What a find! Our hosts were wonderful and so friendly - the owner was on holidays but his sister and niece were first class. We are inter railing around Europe for our honeymoon and are sure we will struggle to find a more welcoming place to stay!
Although our room was small it had everything we needed... Iron, ironing board, coffee machine, chocolates... I could go on and on! (NB Happy Hour is from 5-7pm**)
Perfect location - everything is in walking distance - to explore an amazing city!

We stayed three nights in this beautiful house. It's superbly located for everything Amsterdam has to offer with rooms overlooking the canal. No breakfast - but this is very clear on their website - but several great breakfast spots 2 minutes away. The owners were on holiday so we were left in the very capable hands of two relatives who were charming, graceful and very welcoming.

We've no hesitation recommending Sunhead.

Room Tip: Third floor overlooking canal is lovely. Steep stairs though so may be unsuitable for those with mobility problems.

Only two rooms but in a great location run by lovely people. No breakfast but a nearby cafe more than makes up for it. And they have Happy Hour at 5pm. Rooms are comfortable with everything needed to make your stay comfortable. You're really staying in their house but you have your own key and ready access. They let us leave our case on the last day until evening before heading for the flight home. Great place. Just book it!

Room Tip: The Tulip room has a great view and is great but on 3rd floor and no lift/elevator

First, the meaning of the title of this review. Sunhead is a bed and breakfast without the breakfast, which is okay because they make that very clear on their website and offer several suggestions for breakfast in the neighborhood. As Carlos, one of the owners, told us, after he turned 60, after more than 20 years in the business, he decided he wasn't making any more breakfasts. The only bad thing is that I bet we missed out on an excellent breakfast, because everything else about Sunhead of 1617 is outstanding.

The location could not be better. It is located on the Herengracht Canal, which is beautiful. It is a very short walk to Dam Square, the Anne Frank House, and the beautiful Jordaan neighborhood.

The building is very attractive and extremely well-maintained and beautifully decorated. A highlight of the interiors are the decorative wall paintings done by Carlos. We thought his painting of a Delft tile was actually a tile until we looked very closely.

The owners are very friendly and accommodating. They provided useful information about cabs and restaurants to help us navigate our way around town.

Our room overlooked the canal. It was very pretty and well-appointed with in-room coffee maker and hair dryer. The bathroom was large and modern and the bed was very comfortable. The wi-fi was powerful and included in the room charges.

The only reservation about Sunhead is that it has a very narrow spiral staircase. Our bags were carried to our rooms for us, but if you have any difficulty with stairs you're likely to have a problem here.

My wife and I both enjoyed our stay at Sunhead very much and meeting the owners was a highlight of our entire stay in Europe.

Room Tip: Ask if a room overlooking the canal is available.

I booked Sunhead originally on the strength of previous reviews of its legendary breakfasts which alas are no more (but the booking was non-cancellable). It is perhaps expensive on the face of it for "just" an ensuite room, but then, Amsterdam is an expensive city and the Sunhead made up for this initial disappointment in many ways. Firstly, Carlos and Roelf are generous hosts who go out of their way to make guests welcome. As an example, they have "happy hour" between 5-7pm where guests can meet each other and chat over a free glass of wine and nibbles. They are also happy to recommend places to eat locally. (Go to Greenwoods for breakfast - outstanding!). On our last day they were happy for us to leave our luggage until it was time for us to leave for the airport, which was much appreciated.
There were freebies in the room too, including good coffee, cereal bars and our new addiction, stroopwaffels. Our room had a fridge which was very useful for keeping extra drinks and fruit in (there's a handy supermarket a couple of minutes walk away). The bed was very comfortable (though be warned if you are here for a romantic getaway, the bed is two singles pushed together).
The location is fabulous, an easy 10-15 mins walk from the station, and 2 mins to Anne Frank house (buy tickets before you go!!!!!) in one direction and 2 mins to Dam square in the other. The house is on a lovely leafy canal, and the front rooms have great views. We enjoyed listening to the carillon bells of the local church (I was very amused by lullabies at 3.30 am!) but if you are a very light sleeper, or not so much into bells you might want to close the window at night; we loved it. Much has been said about the stairs in other reviews, but these are typical of a canal house and part of its historic charm. Pack light and they aren't an issue for the reasonably able-bodied.
We had a fabulous time and would be happy to recommend the Sunhead.
