“Gourmet Cafeteria Style Food!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2009

I landed upon "La Place" after I met an Aussie at the hostel I was staying at. He visits Amsterdam on a regular basis, and claims he ALWAYS stops here at least once.

This is one of the best discoveries I had while in Amsterdam, and i will be sure to return!

It is difficult to spot from the street, and seems to be located within the V&D, one of the Netherlands largest department stores. When you enter the first thing you do is grab a tray and start wandering around the different food stations. They have a grill with mixed meats, giant pots filled with homemade soups, a sandwhich bar, a pizza oven with made-to-order pizza, dessert station, a salad bar......The list goes on and on.

All prices are clearly marked, and you just go around filling up your tray until you have everything you want. Then you hop in line, and pay for it all cafeteria style. Prices are cheap!!! especially for the quality of the food delivered. The place is absolutely packed with Dutch, but there are plenty of places to sit at.
Once you find "La Place" you will be tempted to come back every afternoon

note, not sure if the tripadvisor address is correct. Look up location via internet

“Tasty, healthy and good value alternative to fast food.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2009

Although we read the reviews on here before going to Amsterdam, and therefore had the name and address noted down, we hadn't really formed a mental image of what we would find at La Place, and we were very pleasantly surprised.

The "food court" description is close, since the interior is divided into different sections where you can grab a variety of different types of food, which you then pay for at a cash desk before either taking your food away, or sitting at one of the many tables around the court. The cuisines include a huge salad bar, a pizza bar, a sandwich deli, noodle/stir-fry bar, a grilled meat/fish & chip bar and a fruit salad/smoothie bar. All of these offered a huge range of very good quality ingredients, which were then prepared (or cooked) on the spot as you like it. We had the salad bar, which is charged by weight, and it worked out good value for money as well as very tasty. There's a bakery in the court too, so you can buy variety of breads, rolls, and cakes to supplement the meal. Look out for the hand-topped, fresh baked foccacia slabs which were both indulgent and enormous.

The entire food court is to one side of the ground floor level of the V&D department store at the south end of Kalverstraat, and for those familiar with London, it reminded us of Selfridges food court, but a bit more Dutch (and quite a bit less expensive). All in all, a great option for a healthy meal in the middle of a crazy day shopping in Amsterdam.

“Good Food and for Value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2008

There are a lot of variety of food for selection, including mixed-grill, stir fried noddles, salad, fruit, juice, offered at a reasonable price. (15 euros per person) It looks like a cafeteria and a lot of people dining there.
