“Ok, but....”
Reviewed 4 January 2012

One of Brussels' fine Art Nouveau houses. It feels like entering a 19th century private home. Nice details, but quite small.
Unfortunately, the area in Schaerbeek, where the house is located, is not nice - it's run down, dirty and sinister. There is nothing Belgian about this outlandish place, instead of European flair expect halal butchers and tea rooms full of bearded men.

“Interesting, but avid art nouveau lovers will remain unsatisfied ...”
Reviewed 8 October 2011

Why? Because the number of real art nouveau elements in the interior (as well as the exterior) is rather limited. This is a typical example of the eclectical architecture mix, very popular in Brussels around those days. It shows a bit of Horta's talents, but his other and later projects are much more worth a visit! As a compensation the permanent exhibition in the house tells a lot about daily life around 1900 in Brussels (Schaerbeek), and the temporary ones pay attention to aspects of Victor Horta and art nouveau.

Maison Autrique is the very first striking building Victor Horta designed (1893) This important Art Nouveau touchstone underwent an exemplary restoration.
It's interior division is full of surprises: François Schuiten and Benoît Peeters have staged an original scenography, from the cellar to the attic.
When i visited the house, there was a (temporary) exhibition around the work of Winsor McCay.
