“The perfect spot!”
Reviewed June 12, 2017 for a stay in June 2017

What a perfect location to experience the history of Ypres and its involvement in the First World War. Just down the street from the Cloth Hall and the In Flanders Field Museum. A short walk up to the Menin Gate for the Last Post service in the evenings. Conveniently located just a short walk from the grocery store. This was the most delightful home stay, and even the steep steps up to the room were great. Jurgen and Heidi are wonderful hosts and couldn't have been kinder.

“What a lovely stay”
Reviewed March 10, 2017 for a stay in March 2017

The location of this holiday home is excellent. It was SO convenient for the centre of Ypres and an excellent base for the WWI battlefields. The house is tastefully done, in an old style. It is a handy self catering unit and there are shops nearby, there is a supermarket within walking distance and a slightly larger one a short drive away (you could walk if you are feeling fit). The bedrooms were lovely. The shower room is downstairs but I had no issue with that. Please be aware that the stairs are very steep, which is not unusual in a house like this. However, if you have mobility issues or smaller children, it may be an issue. Do not though take this as a big negative, it needs to be pointed out. I know my father would struggle, but he is mid 70s and wobbly on his feet. I would thoroughly recommend this place and would have no hesitation in staying again.

“Very central, well equipped and unique house.”
Reviewed September 7, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

Perfect location literally 2 minutes from town centre, shops etc of Ypres. Free parking is available 5 minutes walk away.
Very friendly helpful owner and the welcome beer and chocolate went down a treat. House is beautifully furnished with antiques and things relating to WWI period. And kitchen has excellent up to date cooking equipment, everything you can imagine, as well as curios.
Stairs are steep in the Flemish tradition so the non-Flemish elderly or the frail might be nervous but our children found this all part of fun. They also loved the top floor attic playroom.

“Beautiful home from home”
Reviewed July 31, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

Heidi and Jurgen met us at their lovely house in Ypres (Ieper) at an arrival time convenient for us. The house has been renovated with excellent attention to detail. It had plenty of space for our family of 4. The kitchen was well equipped. The wifi worked well. Bedrooms and linens were comfortable. The house is full of quirky collectible objets. There is on road parking outside (restricted hours) and a free carpark 5 minutes walk away. The house is under 5 minutes walk for the market square and a small supermarket.

The house is excellent for a stay in Ypres. Visit the museums, chocolate shops and ramparts one day and drive to the WW1 sites outside of town on the other. The 8pm Last Post at Menin Gate is unmissable.

As previous reviewers have mentioned, the stairs really are steep, as is common in all of these 2 up 2 down terrace houses. I would advise against staying with toddlers due to the stairs and the amount of lovely ornaments that would need to be moved from little fingers.

Highly recommended for a short break with or without children.

This is a brilliant place. Great location near to the centre. Lovingly restored and decorated, filled with quirky antiquey artefacts. Who is the man in the picture over the fire place? The owners have done their best to think of everything you might want for your stay. It really was beautifully prepared. Can't recommend highly enough.

“Atmospheric holiday home that has it all”
Reviewed November 4, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

De Historie is a must for anyone wanting to visit the World War 1 battlefields in Flanders. Perfectly tucked away in a little side street in Ieper, it's easy walking distance from the town's centre with its museums and restaurants, but it's beautifully peaceful and has free parking nearby.
The house is furnished and equipped to an amazing standard - everything is provided down to tea bags, filter coffee and everything from tea towels to bin liners. There's free wifi to keep the teenagers happy, a room with maps and leaflets to guide you to the sights and all the comforts of home. The decor is outstanding - different and quirky, tastefully and beautifully done. The owners, Jurgen and Heidi, will make sure that they are contactable the day you arrive and will help you navigate and then settle in. This holiday home simply could not be better, the only downside are the very steep stairs - typical of the houses of the area and the time - which may be difficult for people with mobility problems. In every other way this house is a winner.

“Lovely house in a great location”

Had a very good 3 night stay in Ypres in this very comfortable homely house. The beds were extremely comfortable and the house was beautifully decorated with lots of interesting antiques which added to the atmosphere. We were welcomed by the owner who showed us around and left us with a bottle of local beer and and a supply of chocolates, kids and adults all happy! The location in town was perfect, a short walk to the historic center passing a small supermarket where we could get supplies. We visited the Menin gate and battlefields during our visit and had a day in Bruges, an easy day trip from Ypres. Had we stayed longer we would have easily found lots more to do.
