This was the perfect location for exploring Ypres and the surrounding area. Within walking distance of the Menin Gate. Franky was a wonderful host...very happy to help us settle in even though Belgium were about to kick off in the World Cup! The B&B has 2 rooms, one on the first floor and the other on the second floor. We had the second floor. A fabulous room and bathroom. The stairs are steep, so could be an issue for those with mobility problems.
During our stay the weather was very warm, but our room had air conditioning. Franky is out at work for the day, but before leaving in the morning he leaves a delicious breakfast, including fresh bread, pastries, fruit and orange juice for the occupants of both rooms in the breakfast room on the first floor. There is no on site parking, but there is ample free parking a few minutes walk away and limited parking on the doorstep which can be used with the parking permit provided. We would not hesitate to recommend Het Houten Paard. Franky clearly loves what he does and he does it exceptionally well. When we return to Ypres, we will stay again.

What an find this place was, I booked it as it was in an area of Ypres I know. It was my wife's first visit to Belgium and I wanted to find a small intimate place to stay. We didn't expect the level of service and attention the owner, Franky gave. He makes your stay just that little bit special, not only are the rooms cosy the breakfast was superb and he made us feel more like old friends rather than guests.

I can't recommend this place enough, book and see for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Found this little gem of a B&B in Ypres when my usual place was full booked and I was very happy to have found it.
Situated about 10 minutes walking from the centre of Ypres, this B&B is located in a quiet area on the south side of the town. You need to look hard for the entrance because it's not signposted in the same way a hotel would be, but once we arrived we were very happy with the place.
The host, Franky, could not be more accommodating. When we arrived he was only too eager to show us the two rooms available; a first floor room with ensuite bathroom and an upper floor room with external, but BIG!, bathroom. Both rooms were very comfortable and well sized, but mid your head in the upper bathroom as the roof does slope a bit!
Franky was only too happy to arrange our requests for breakfast, which you have in a separate room on the first floor. In here you have coffee and tea making facilities which you can use at any time of day as well as a fridge which Franky kindly added a couple of bottles of beer for us ... no extra charge.
There was more than enough for the two of us at breakfast and we had to ask Franky for a little less the following day as we simply couldn't finish it!
We spent most of the days travelling the area and it was great to come back to such a comfortable place.
A couple of things to note, parking it quite restrictive in that part of town, but Franky will provide you with a parking pass to help out. Also the stairs are very narrow and steep so anybody with mobility issues may find this a problem.
However, it's another place in Ypres that I will look to go back to again.
A great place!

Room Tip: Only two rooms though the top room is bigger.

We have just returned from a weekend stay in Ypres and could not have wished for better accomodation!
We were welcomed by the owner who speaks fluent English and shown around the property which consists of two rooms plus bathrooms and a breakfast room. As a party of four we had booked both rooms and were given keys to come and go as we pleased.
The property has been recently renovated to a very high standard and was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was also very good with a wide range of foods and beverages available. Lovely coffee and freshly squeezed juices accompanied by fresh rolls and pastries, just to mention just a few!
Although we only stayed 2 nights, our towels were changed after the first night.
The location was perfect for the Menin Gate, being just 10 minutes walk as well as the main square where most of the restaurants were situated.
Our host was most helpful with local knowledge and tips and also provided parking permits for our car which we parked in the same street.
We could not have asked for more!

Room Tip: If a party of 3, one room has a single bed on an open plan mezzanine.
