Churchill’s Apartment at Menin Gate House is incredible. One of the main advantages is that it is right across the road from the Menin Gate. So while you are watching hordes of people pouring off tour buses you can relax with a nice drink knowing you can take your time. And you can take your time because you won’t have to squeeze in with the masses watching from behind the ropes. You will have a front row view of one of the most moving ceremonies I have ever witnessed. The owner of Menin Gate Apartments, Benoit is also the chairman of the Last Post Association and we were thrilled when he escorted us to the ceremony and ushered us to the V.I.P. area where we had a marvellous view of the proceedings. My husband is in the military and has a keen interest in WW1 history so you can imagine his delight when Benoit asked him to do a reading at the ceremony. It was the highlight of the visit, and possibly his life!
The actual apartment is spectacularly decorated, with a huge array of incredible artefacts. It was extremely spacious, downstairs there is a living room, dining room, full sized kitchen and outdoor terrace where you can enjoy a meal in fine weather. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, the main with a full ensuite and the view of the Menin Gate. The second with semi-ensuite, shower and sink with a toilet down the hallway.
There is street parking at the front of the apartment but we did struggle on some occasions to find a spot and had to settle for one in the side street, although it was usually down to timing. We found that if we couldn’t park out the front, once the crowds at the Last Post Ceremony moved on, there were always parking places available.
As far as I am concerned, this is the ONLY place to stay in Ypres

We stayed at the Menin Gate House 2 property for 3 nights. It is a large 3 bedroom home. The home is beautifully decorated with various artifacts and photos related to the local history. It is situated half a block from the Menin Gate which is perfect for attending the nightly Last Post Ceremony. The host was wonderful and went out of his way to help us. He even invited us to be his special guests at the Last Post ceremony as he is the chair of the Last Post association. At the ceremony my father-in-law was given the opportunity to recite a poem which was a very special and memorable experience for us.

The home has a large kitchen which was perfect for having a nightly happy hour. The beds were all very comfortable. The house does have very squeaky floors so you do know when someone is up and moving around; however, that was so much part of the charm. I would highly recommend staying at this property!

Stunning location and views. Crisp, clean and recently renovated. Very helpful owners. In our top floor apartment if you are tall the bedroom may be too low for you to avoid bumping your head. Also for the older age group going down stairs without a bannister to the bathroom in the middle of the night was tricky.

Room Tip: Go for the apartments lower down in the house.

We have just returned home after three nights in this charming guest house in Ypres.

Just the two of us had room to spare in the two bedroom apartment.

Everything you could reasonably for and thankfully no TV in the bedrooms.

Located literally just across the road from the Menin Gate with the Last Post ceremony each evening at 2000 hrs. Our host Benoit is Chairman of the Last Post Association and if you wish he will take you to the ceremony and provide a prime spot.

Parking is available outside the property - 3 hr Max between 0900 and 1700, no restrictions overnight - wardens do check !

Not cheap by any means but that is up to you !

For people who are visiting the war graves to pay their respect to long lost relatives or just have an interest in WW1 this is the place to stay! The apartments that my nephew & I stayed in on the 11th & 12th August fit the bill perfectly. They are well furnished with en-suit facilities in both bedrooms & on the ground floor a very well equiped kitchen alongside a lounge that is simply steeped in history. A short stroll accross the road is the Menin Gate & a little further into Ypres as many restaurants & bars that you need. Further along is the Cloth Hall & Cathedral in all their splendour - so for us the Menin Gate House ticked all the boxes!
An added bonus & a real plus factor is the host at the apartment - Benoit! His knowledge of Ypres & it's history is exemplary and he took time out to explain in great detail the history of the house & his passion - The Last Post Association, an event he took time out to accompany us to on our first night.
Time permitting it is a place that we would certanly return to.
