“Walls of Serpa”
Review of Muralhas de Serpa

Muralhas de Serpa
Reviewed May 6, 2017

The city centre of Serpa is closed by magnificent walls built from the Castle to protect the city from invaders attacks. They are very well preserved and photogenic as well.
I wish I could have seen it at night, it must be also beautiful with the lights.

The town is very nice and the ramparts are very well kept.

HOWEVER: do not go by without buying artisan cheese from Tradiserpa creamery. Rua dos Canes,6 7830 Serpa

Excellent and world class.

Not cheap at all (as seems to be the norm in Portugal for unknown reasons) at 16.5 euros a Kilo for the young amanteigado and 18.5 euros a Kilo for the mature curado, direct from the producer, it is exactly double than the price of Spanish Torta del Casar or de la Serena bought direct. Very similar Cheeses, though the Spanish ones are maybe better known internationally.

Built in the late 12th century, the castle and the walls were a well-suited protection for the Portuguese fighting the muslims in the south. Now, the tower has been changed and it gives all municipality citizens the hours, and allows for stunning photos in sunny days. A must see, including the palace (Condes de Ficalho), and the newly renovated Historical Museum - which is located inside the castle itself. You should also head for the other tower, where you can see the horizon, the golden lands, and imagine you would be a Portuguese fighter in the 12th century, seeing muslims in their horses coming to attack the castle.. Have fun!

The whole village is nice, small and well cared. Clean, good options for souvenirs, warm in the Summer so plenty of water is recommended.
