Last summer ( july 2008) we stayed for a week in Vila Belgica with 15 people, so full house !! It is a beautiful vila set outside the Center of Horta. We rented 2 cars for the group, we had every other night a nice diner in the garden (organised by the owners) by the way wonderfull BBQ and every morning a good continental breakfast. 5 of us were divers so every morning we went to the center and had 2 dives organised by "Dive Acores".
They also organised 2 days a whale watching trip, amazing, certainly a must ! Every afternoon we went to explore the island, with our cars. The owners and the daughter helped us planning the days, good restaurants, tips for whale watching, diving, sailing ... They were always ready for a warm good personal service ! Tanx for the nice holliday !

Stayed: July 2008

we stayed at Vila Belgica and although it is very nice it is too far out of Horta We hired a car whilst there but although this made things better you were unable to drink at the evening because of the drive back and car Hire was not cheap!! On the days we did not have a car We felt like we was required to leave the room as Yvette wanted to get on with the daily chores Indeed there were no chairs to sit in the garden So you were confined to your room The villa has room for a pool and this would make staying there more pleasurable as you could pass the morning away round pool Walk into Horta (you must be very agile steep walk and no pavement so beware of cars) then have a meal and taxi home.
The Azores are beautiful and we hope to go back But would choose a place nearer Horta.

My wife and I stayed here for one evening in July 2007 while traveling through the Azores. We were originally booked for 3 nights but we had to leave after 1 night as we did not rent a car nor carry a cell phone, making it very impractical to stay so far from Horta.

The house itself is pleasant, with clean accommodations (no television, phone or internet access though) and a beautiful view from the terrace of Pico and Sao Jorge as well as Horta below. Yvette, who owns the property with her husband, was friendly and attentive and this would be a good place for travelers with a car and cell phone to arrange tours, meals, activities, etc. who don't need to be in the heart of town. The transfer from the airport to the inn is approximately 15 Euro each way. Breakfast is served by Yvette in the morning and is a typical European spread (bread, meat, cheese). Guests have use of the kitchen if they want to store sandwiches, drinks, etc.

However, Vila Belgica is 45 minutes walk to Horta and likely 1 hour+ returning (owing to uphill route to get back from town). Our first night, we took a cab to Horta (a reasonable 5-6 Euro each way) but when we tried to return around 10:30pm, there were no taxis to be found. A manager at the restaurant tried calling a cab but he had no luck. Finally, close to 11:30pm, the manager agreed to drive us back, which was a relief as a 75 min. uphill walk after midnight was not very enticing. The next morning Yvette tried to explain that this was "not normal" and assured us not to worry about it, but being on vacation I did not want to deal with the stress of having anymore potential midnight walks or dinner curfew in order to catch a taxi.

Bottom line - the accommodations were fine if you don't need television or internet and want a little peace and quiet, but you really need a car and cell phone if you intend to go into town more than once.

We spent two weeks on the beautiful island of Faial and unlike other tourists who travel between the islands we decided to chill out in one place which proved to be the right decision!
Vila Belgica has a fantastic outlook over to Pico mountain and this view can be appreciated on the terrace at breakfast as you watch the clouds float over the top and back in the balmy breeze.
Jean-Pierre and Yvette made us feel so welcome and were always giving us advice and help with anything we needed - from beaches to restaurants and whether it was a good day to go whale watching!
Evening meals were also organised so that we could meet the other guests and really get to feel at home.
We would have absolutely no hesitation in returning in the future.

I was searching the trip advisor and discovered some people had enjoyed their staying at Vila Belgica, so I want to add my experience. I was there in August 2004, and literally fell in love with that place. It is not just the location: the walks from the village of Faial to the house or the panoramic terrace with the view of the Pico Vulcano across the sea (it takes your breath away) coupled with the warm hospitality of the Belgian familiy running the house, in a familiar and professional way at the same time, all this make a staying in Vila Belgica a five stars experience.

We stayed there some time ago, but I noticed only now the possibility to write a review on Vila Belgica. We had, and you may certainly expect, a very hartly and warm welcome by the owners. The rooms a very tidy and every necessary comfort is present or will be provided.
The view from the terrace is stunning and covers almost 270° degrees over the surrounding islands (I hope you will have a very clear day as we did, so the Pico vulcan top is completely visible) and the town of Horta with its marina. Just ask for yvette and jean-Pierre to prepare you dinner and you will be surprised !
