The Azor is listed as a 5 star hotel - in the context of Sao Miguel / the Azores (where choice is limited), this is probably correct, although in global terms it would probably be ranked as a 4 star hotel.

The rooms are very comfortable and stylish, and each has a view of the sea. Make sure to request a room on one of the higher floors. The restaurant is excellent, with imaginative and locally sourced dishes turned out for a very competitive price. The service from the staff is also top notch. The waiters in the restaurant are clearly passionate about the menu and the local ingredients and were always eager to explain what had gone into each dish. Meanwhile, the front desk is consistently staffed by very friendly and efficient receptionists who are full of helpful suggestions.

A few tiny pointers for the hotel to consider to further enhance the quality and comfort of their hotel:

- There is music playing in the corridors 24/7 - this can be heard from the bedrooms, and although it didn’t trouble us personally, for any guests who are more sensitive to sound / have trouble sleeping, this could be an issue

- The rooms, although very stylish, have a few issues with layout. The bathroom design results in water from the shower spilling out into the bathroom, and there is no extractor fan / window within the bathroom, meaning they steam up very quickly. In addition, in the bedroom there are not enough hooks on walls or doors to hang towels, coats etc.

- The layout of the 1st floor is rather odd - unless you switch lifts, you have to walk through the restaurant to get to and from the gym... potentially an odd intrusion for diners to see people returning hot and sweaty from the gym on their way back to their rooms.

- The breakfast - which is €18 if not included within your room price - is delicious but the staff are not sufficiently quick to replace items, meaning that often plates on the buffet are left empty, glasses are not replaced, and used plates / cutlery from guests’ tables are not cleared away. This was the case both occasions we had breakfast here.

These points did not diminish our stay at all - we thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Azor and would recommend it to anyone.

Nice hotel, but I didn't like shiny black bathrooms. Some of my friends bumped into walls.Shower leaked to bathroom floor. There was no seal for shower door.Outdoor pool area not shaded. Hot under sun. Wet under rain.

I can't say enough good things about our experience at the Azor Hotel! The staff was wonderful and went above and beyond in their service. The accommodations were modern and clean. We loved the pool/lounge area, the restaurant and our proximity to Ponta Delgada. We also had a blast on the excursions we planned through the hotel. I wish I was going back soon!

Our stay was very good (good selection at breakfast, free parking, private balcony, comfortable bed, cookies at turn down) but not exceptional. The hotel could use a little TLC (some of our towels were quite frayed, towel bar was close to falling off, and A/C never really got cool). I also recommend stopping at their bar on the roof top - delicious drinks with an incredible view!
