Out of the blue is without a doubt the best hostel I have ever stayed in. It is clean and well laid out with spacious private and dorm rooms. The staff are incredibly helpful and really make you feel like part of a family while you are there. A feeling that is helped by the excellent breakfasts, served out in the garden around a big table, and the family dinners, excellent food for only €10pp including drinks.

This hostel was absolutely brilliant, just the best hostel I've ever stayed in and better than some hotels too.

The check in was easy. My room on the first floor had a view out of the front of the building down the street which was nice.

The beds are comfortable and you have your own charging point which is helpful. The lockers under the bed are large and secure - you'll need to remember your own padlock. Towels are included and you can also rent beach towels for 3 euros.

The group dinners each night are fantastic - great quality food and drink and a really great way to get to know other guests, which is great for lone travellers.

The breakfasts are the best breakfasts ever - not just out of hostels, but hotels and even some brunch places. The pancakes are light and fluffy and served with fruit. Some days there is also an extra plate served - one day I had some sort of cake. There is also yoghurt, bread and fruit was well as coffee and Azorean tea. If you have to get up early, they have some breakfast in the kitchen downstairs too.

You can buy wine for 2 euros a glass, and it is really nice wine too!

The garden is a lovely relaxing place with hammocks and places to sit - perfect if you want to chill out during the day.

There are four bathrooms, which are not the usual communal shower rooms you get in hostels, but self contained bath/shower rooms which is really great and easier for showering and getting ready.

The hostel was really clean and always saw the cleaners hard at work which is great.

The staff are absolutely fantastic, so friendly, helpful and welcoming, and I think this attitude extends to the guests as all the people I met were really friendly and it was like being one big happy family. I stayed for five nights but would happily stay for a week or more. As a lone traveller, it was great that I met so many people to do things with (as well as getting some time to myself) - and not all hostels foster such a friendly atmosphere.

Overall, I cannot recommend this place enough, and my stay here really did help to make my whole experience of Sao Miguel that bit more special.

Room Tip: All rooms are good but they do have some dorms that open onto the garden

To date, Out of the Blue is one of the best if not the best hostel I've stayed in. It is beautiful inside & out, has great atmosphere, friendly staff & guests too (great place to meet fellow travelers). The owners really know how to put together a property with a unique touch. I stayed only one night & had a double room with private bath (unfortunately could not get room on return trip later that week). The room was clean, well decorated & air conditioned. Noise was not a problem. Beautiful backyard garden area. Highly recommend the dinner option, which was affordable & delicious (bbq in the garden that particular night). Had an early morning flight so missed the breakfast. There is a large shared kitchen & dining area. Highly recommend!

Fantastic place! It is well located in the center of the city, 5 minutes from the port. The rooms and beds are spacious and very comfy. A huge and fresh breakfast is served everyday in the large garden. The pancakes, french toasts and the orange cakes are beyond delicious. There are two coffee machines for free coffee 24h. On top of that the staff and the guests were very nice and friendly.

The hostel staff are all available to help. Loved the hostel architecture and decoration. Amazing work at the garden. Don't miss the breakfast and if you can join them for a family dinner.
This will take your trip to Azores to another level, you will feel you are part of that "family"

Room Tip: Choose the top room with view to the garden
