Anfiteatro is a culinary delight! Everyone benefits enormously. The chef's tasting menu of 5 courses with one glass of excellent Douro wine is an amazing deal for 2 at 36 EU - you can add 11 EU for another 3 excellent paired wines with each dish. The cuisine is spectacular and on top of it, Antiteatro is an institute of instruction in cuisine and hospitality. The five course tasting menu is extraordinary, as is the amazing service of Catarina, Sous Chef, Sommelier, and Maitre D', Veronica, and Patricia as servers. Too many fabulous dishes to mention but Fafo, an Azorean dessert, is taken to aonther level. Don't miss this opportunity!

according to the latest fads this is the place to eat if you want to pay a lot for strage sounding dishes of a new way of cooking, minimalist in quantity max in price...all foreign souding names applied to local produce sound ridiculous as ridiculous are the amnounts of food provided..it is more a tasting than eating, but fashionable people prefer this...I prefer a pauper's plate full of food...

You must visit both the restaurant upstairs and the cafe downstairs. We had a 4 course meal for 27€ (without wine) the last night in Ponta Delgada, but it tasted like a menu for 60€ at least. The food was really good, and the view was fantastic. You can see the sundown over the Harper while you enjoy your dinner.

The restaurant is the restaurantschool but you won't notice that the chef hasn't been a cook for years.

We just arrived back at our hotel following a stunning culinary experience at Anfiteatro. Unbeknownst to us, the restaurant is actually a culinary and tourism training academy. Members of the staff are learning by doing, and they definitely were not disappointing. We actually purchased this dinning experience through "Azores Getaways" (through which we did a good majority of the rest of our trip planning).

We were pleasantly greeted to a professional, sleek atmosphere that had good mood lighting, quality background music and a well polished look. We were promptly seated and offered menus. My wife and I do not speak a word of Portuguese but all wait staff were patient and encouraging with our meager efforts. Despite her claims otherwise, our principal server Adilia Paço had more than passable English. Maria Inês Vieira (our other principal waitress) made all efforts to explain all dishes as presented in English. Both of them were kind and encouraging as we did our best to compliment the staff and the chefs utilizing our pocket phrase book.

The wine included with the dinner service was full bodied and stood up to the dishes it accompanied. The lighter "traditional" tasting menu fit well with the white while the red sat nicely with the meatier, umami flavours of the "Azores" tasting menu.

The dishes were all well presented and meticulously arranged. Careful attention to detail was taken when placing small edible flowers or garnishes. The amuse bouche was perfectly cooked and kicked off the meal strong. The following dishes flowed well from one to the next, progressively getting heavier and more satiating. It's imperative that you save room for the spectacular desserts (The coffee/citrus dish and the salted caramel/banana/cake) that capped off the evening with a perfect finish.

It was our first night here in Azores on our Honeymoon and compliments of the magnificent staff at Anfiteatro, they served a perfectly paired port just prior to finishing course.

I would encourage anyone who visits to take in the panoramic view of the harbour and terrific staff and flavours on offer here.

The 5 course tasting menu was very good. We had a choice of 2 menus and wine was included for $CDN70. Each course was described to us upon delivery. I'd never had an Azorean cake (assembly required) and our waitress helped me out without being condescending about it. Great presentation and taste experience.
The portions are smaller than what is usually served on the island - because it is a tasting menu after all - but by the time dessert is finished it satisfies.
