Going to the market for a sandwich doesn’t sound that special but in Ponta Delgada it is worth making the effort. A very small menu comprising five sandwich options, two fresh juices, milk tart and tea. The guy at Sabores waits for you to make up you mind - for us bolo with cheese from São Jorge, walnuts and honey & pork pate on local bread with red onion and chives, plus two pineapple juices - he then sets about preparing it from scratch. This is not a place to hurry. When you sandwich and juice are ready he delivers them to your makeshift “table” (two wooden crates) and moves on to the next customer. When he runs out of ingredients he just nips to one of the establishments in the market.
The sandwiches were superb and the juice sweet but with a sharp kick. If you get the chance go and get a sandwich one lunchtime.
