Finding the Hotel and its hidden entrance, it is hard even if you have your gps. Once you find it, you get a feeling of going back in time.
It is old and so is the environment of the place. Rooms are nice and cozy, but little small regarding expectaion from such place. The room we had, as nice window-doors to the garden.
The garden is huge with many kinds of plants and old trees. Dont miss it if you are there.
The staff is very freindly and helpfull.
The breakfast room, looks as it does not belong to this place. The breakfast buffet is OK.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the garden on the new side.

The best part of our trip to Coimbra. Staff was very helpful and attentive, the gardens were beautiful, and dinner at the restaurant was the best meal we had in Portugal.

I won't bother to reiterate what previous posts have established regarding the state of decline the hotel is in, true indeed. Nonetheless, we still found it to have a cozy charm and antiquey character. The gardens, although beautiful and particularly memorable for their sequoia, were surprisingly unkept. For us, the highlight of it all was the welcoming letter awaiting us in our room. It boasted magnificant views of the garden where "on occasion, you may even spot the ocasional wood cock."
I guess whoever looked up wood pecker in the dictionary didn't hit the right target on the pecker part.
On a different note, the bed was awesomely plush and comfortable and the restaurant was expensive but worth it.

A hotel with a good reputation and in a nice location ... but the product does not justify the price.

The rooms in the old building are very authentic but noisy from footfall and conversations of guests in adjacent corridors - and on our visit suffered from an infestation of ants. Provision of lighting for reading is somewhat inadequate.

Staff were rather superior about public transport and were not interested in providing information about buses (which run past the gate) or trains to and from Coimbra.

Waiting at dinner was of variable quality - wine and water were not topped up. The pudding was described as being garnished with raspberry fruit/sauce but actually came with blackcurrant - waiters showed no interest in this contradiction.

Front desk staff insisted that umbrellas should be left by the entrance - but then were unsympathetic when the umbrellas were stolen.

Yes – it feels that tired!

Lets get the bouquets out the way before the brick bats however.

The service is very good and the restaurant and catering here is really very good. In addition if you just looked at the pictures on the website the old part of the building is very pretty (though whoever give them permission to put in those hideous UPVC replacement windows into a historic building should be shot!) the gardens are attractive, though by way of a warning you have to be pretty fit to walk around them – there are few formal pathways/steps.

The problem is with just about everything else. In particular the standard of the hotel in general. The garden rooms are incredibly tired and dated with a standard of décor that just screams coach tour rather than the restrained luxury I would expect from a Regis and Chateaux property. The maintenance is obvious lacking as well – the sad agale filled “Japanese garden” and when I was there several windows in the corners leaked and had towels in front of them.

Another thing the website doesn’t dwell on the mind bogglingly unsympathetic spa / conference / breakfast room extension which dwarfs the original building reached by a labyrinth of dark corridors. This is also looking very tired now as only a modernist building can with feel more of a government office that a luxury hotel.

But even if you put aside these “big things” even the small things – an unweeded swimming pool patio, a welcome folder so dog eared all the pages fall out and most irritatingly a gate seems manually operated by a sleepy security guard – queues of three of more cars are not uncommon – you have hotel that is simply not up to scratch.

A very good staff and a very good restaurant. The hotel has nice gardens sorrounding it. A little far from Coimbra historic center, but it´s cheap to get a cab (about 6-8 euros). The house, the furniture, the carpets however looks a little outdated. The rooms are large, but dark during the night and the bathroom needs refurbishing. The living room behind the front desk is also dark and outdated. There is no internet connection in the rooms, only in the lobby.

My husband and I stayed for one night during a car trip in Portugal. We really enjoyed it, only sorry we couldn't stay longer. The hotel is situated in a very beautiful garden, the garden rooms are nice, ours even had it's own little private garden. We had a very good dinner in the restaurant, where they also were good at catering for allergies. The staff were all very helpful and pleasant. Ok, there was no wifi in the room, but I didn't want to access my job anyway. The Quinta never claimed to be a business hotel!

Room Tip: We liked Garden room no 2.
