Take a converted church with an ancient wall in it's basement and a gold bar you can hold in it's reception...and you have the Money Museum in Lisbon! This museum is only a couple of minutes walk from the Praca do Comercio, and it's free to enter, so there's really no reason not to take a look. Don't be put off by the security scanning as you go in, remember, there is a gold bar in there!
The variety of exhibits was good, I especially liked the really old coins, the workmanship was incredible, and the collection of different bank notes which was really interesting. As some other reviewers have said, the staff were all extremely helpful and friendly. Just make sure you follow the plan and don't miss out half of the exhibits (like some of our group did...!!). The museum is spread over a few floors but it does have a lift for those with mobility issues.
Highly recommended!

The kids were looking forward to this museum. Not a museum that I would actually go to. I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed it. We got to hold a gold bar. The kids got to make their own bank notes and coins, amongst other activities. They have an amazing coin collection. The security guys on each floor were super helpful and were always giving us info or interacting with the kids. The amazing thing is it’s free.

Wonderful place for education. If you would like to give good lecture for your kids (and yourself) about origin of money this will be right place. The museum is interactive, so kids will be actively involved into the process. It’s interesting for everyone to see the minting and printing processes.

Not just a boring sort of history about money and bills. It is a complete history since the beginning of times, with practical experiences and examples. It is 100% worth the visit!

Stumbled on this by accident, as very warm thought we would cool of by visiting. It is free, bar the security on entering, but a lovely cool building
Well worth it the bank museum is interesting, but the excavated underground is fascinating.
As it is quite tight you have to wait your turn, but worth it
