The works here are include sculpture, painting, and photography...and do not shy away from the political history of the country. It was definitely a great eye-opener to be able to read /see pieces from conflicted eras and learn about the country I had just been spending so much time in.

If you love modern painting and sculpture, this beautiful gallery is something special. Easy to get to, even if you are downtown. Jump on the subway to San Sebastian, and it puts you right there.

Q-Trip: To see Leopoldo de Almeida small works and a
small history lesson is essential.
You WILL visit his magnificent statue at
Santa Maria de Belem ... so why not learn a
little more about him here?
Q-Trip: Nice walk through Edward the VII park.
Q-Trip: For the Capp lovers (sorry Expresso Portugal) a
Starbuck is up on the corner before the museum.
Q-Trip: Take a walk through Cortes Ingles food court ...
There’s a lot of take out yummy here plus olives,
and other Portuguese delights including a
super duper selection of wine and alcohol.
Fever Tree in stock ...
The best about modern art is it gets you thinking versus all the classic ‘stuff’ of Mother Mary and the little old man baby.

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is a marvel. Created by an Armenian art lover Calouste Gulbenkian used his immense fortune to build a great collection of art. There are two museums on site, one is dedicated to his personal art furnishings from his former home in Paris and the other is the modern art collection. The two museum are separated by a luxuriant garden. The cafeteria is also quite good but remember to eat inside the terrace is only suitable if you are having just a drink, the pigeons are very aggressive if you have food.

The art collections span decades and continents. I was surprised to see a Rembrandt, Monet, Gainesborough, and on and on in addition to learning about many artists that are not internationally as famous....but never the less quite impressive.

Beautiful gardens and places to walk outdoors between buildings. Price is very good too. 10 euros entrance.

We also ate lunch at one of the many cafeterias and it was quite good. we were able to sit outdoors and they serve the table with actual china and glassware--this does not happen in the U.S.

We walked there from Avenida Liberdade, mild uphill walk that was quite pleasant too.
