This hotel is generally fine.
Lovely staff from Dinis who checked me in to Rita who gave me the quick tour, thank you for the warm welcome.
DVDs in all rooms and good DVD library. Nice spacious rooms with good light.
Wifi is 15 euros per day but only ONE device per voucher. You can log in and out so one voucher can last longer than 24 hours.
Small mosquito problem in May (must be worse in Summer) and no in room repellants- the best they could offer was sunburn cream.
Lapa Palace has a fair range of facilities - small gym, small indoor pool (nice temperature)/ outdoor pool/ sauna/ steam- ladies changing area feels a little on the small sweaty side.. The staff are all very sweet. Sweet is the word though... I was on the ground floor initially which didn't feel to safe if you are a solo traveller and like to sleep with fresh air as the option is the balcony doors.. Had a change of room to the 6th floor- what a difference! The light and the open view made a real positive difference. At 30% occupancy I do not understand why they would stick me on the ground floor in the first place...
The hotel is quite a (hilly) walk from the main area or Avenue de Liberdade but taxi's can be called although expect the driver to try it on when they see you are picked up from the hotel eg. one driver tried charging me 'hotel tax'..another reset his meter before I could check what it was as it was strategically placed infront of the passenger side which has a very high seat head rest obscuring your view..anyhow- in general they are all friendly and will back down if you let them know they are being cheeky.
Unfortunately the same can not be said for the hotel's Room Service or rather the gentleman who took my order, Luis. So on my second night I wanted a green salad and asked about bruschetta which wasn't in the main menu selection. Luis suggested he would make some and promptly arrived with the dish and accompaniments. I could hardly believe it when I signed and saw it billed at 20 euros. Luis explained it was this price because it was counted as a sandwich! But this was even at the upper range of their sandwich price list all of which contained either meat or fish. I am certain that you don't need to be Italian to find as I did this to be a complete joke. To add insult to injury the bruschetta is listed in canapes as 2 euros per portion. Well I certainly didn't have 10 portions! I did find it odd that after it was perfectly clear that this was a cheeky gesture which should have been adjusted I did not even get a call back even though I asked Luis to pass my comments on to the Room Service Manager. Needless to say it put me off ordering in room dining again so Luis made 20 bucks and lost 100.
This incident kind of sums up my feelings about Lapa Palace. It could be alot better if some of the staff trying on Four Seasons prices could offer Four Seasons sophisticated service which would involve more of a discussion than simply 'sorry but the customer is always wrong' approach.
The standard of food in Room Service was generally good and fairly priced for this kind of hotel although some dishes had a touch of the amateur experimenter about them for example I found it difficult to avoid ordering something that didn't involve the chef's penchant for cream (milkshake (fair enough), gazpacho (um- ok), garlic foam (not really..).
I really don't know if I would stay here again as I don't like the feeling that someone is taking me for a ride so blatantly and without any reservations on their part when doing so.. However the best part of this stay was that it was so quiet with use of Spa area feeling very exclusive so perhaps I may visit off season when it has good offers and value for money. Also you would get more pleasure from this style of place if staying with friends/ partner.
