“Understated, classy and comfortable”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

Located a block behind Avenida Liberdad, the hotel is close enough to the heart of Baixa to be convenient but far enough away to be quiet at night. The building itself is impressive, dating from the mid-nineteen forties and designed by the architect of the Eden cinema. The modernist style has been reflected in the fixtures, fittings and furniture of the hotel: chunky wood chairs and tables and dramatic brass and chrome light fittings. Other features of interest include a restored barber's shop (to the right of the lift in the main lobby) which feels as though the barber and his clients have just stepped outside for a moment, leaving scissors on the couter and hats on the rack. Our (superior) room was extremely comfortable, spotlessly clean and, despite facing the street, extremely quiet: partly good double glazing, partly because it's a quiet neighbourhood. Staff extremely helpful and firendly. Very good breakfast: smoked ham, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, spinach balls on the hot buffet, fresh squeezed orange juice, excellent fruit salad and strawberries. As you would expect too, very very good coffee. No dinner service but Rubro, a Spanish restaurant, is almost next door (turn left out of the hotel entrance and go past the Pharmacia) serving high quality tapas and more.

Room Tip: Pick a superior one at the front.

I won’t dwell too much on the hotel itself apart from to note that it’s web site does do it justice – curiously the mobile version of the site is better. You’re in for a treat!

But I would like to emphasise how good the service is. Every recommendation from the concierge was a really good one and some of the places (Wine Bar do Castelo!!!) , though off the beaten track really made the trip special. You’d be wise to avail yourselves of their services!

The hotel is great, but we could hear noises from all neighbor rooms. Therefore couldn't really sleep well.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone and look forward to staying there again. Aside from the stunning Art Deco aesthetics, excellent breakfast and very comfortable bed, we were most impressed by the quality of the staff. True professionals with a depth of knowledge of their city and a generosity that made us feel that they wanted us to have the best possible experience.

This is a wonderful hotel. Well situated, superbly staffed and beautifully decorated. Breafast was excellent. My stay was very short (only one night as I was passing through on business) but I plan to return and spend more time on holiday in Lisbon. Most definately the place to stay

The reviews here say it all - this is a real gem. This time, we took advantage of both the free afternoon tea and late night port - all adding to the charming friendly atmosphere of a hotel soaked in Lisbon's recent history. A true delight and thoroughly earning its No.1 status on this site.

Room Tip: The hotel windows are excellent at blocking out street noise, but if you have very sensitive hearing...

The hotel is the most stunning Art Deco building I have ever seen. The staff were wonderful, helpful but not over bearing and made you feel at home (in the most beautiful home ever!) I did not want to leave. There were custard tarts, other pastries, tea and port and ginjinha available in the living room area which was a nice touch We were there for my birthday and arrived back to the hotel after a day of birthday shopping to sparkling wine and pastries in the room. I wasn't expecting it and it was the loveliest surprise! Made me feel very special. Bed was comfortable and the room was well laid out. I thoroughly recommend this hotel.
