Somewhat hidden on a side street (rua dos Correeiros) in central Lisbon just 1 block from the tourist traffic on Rua Augusta and close to the famous Arco da Rua Augusta - is this fantastic find to see a Roman factory under the city. We were fortunate to literally stumble on the start of an English tour. Our guide was exceptional and the museum is top notch. It’s free and takes about 45minutes. Watch you head and all of those lose items (phones and sunglasses) during the walk underground. One of the most interesting sights we saw during our trip and completely overlooked by the masses on Rua Augusta. Sweet find!

A bank tried to build an underground parking structure and ran into archaeological elements going back to Roman times, if not earlier. They turned it into a publicly available archaeological site. The tour is free, but set it up in advance since they can only take a few people at a time in different languages. Steps and narrow passages are worth the trouble. The Roman ruins are the most obvious, but there is more here as well. Our guide was an archaeologist, which is really helpful. It is easily worth the hour we spent.

I was looking forward to this and it didn’t disappoint. We visited at 10am and found availability on the 4pm English tour. After a mooch round the castle we returned and were guided by Maria, an archaeologist. The tour was superb and the ruins found beneath the bank are fascinating, from Phoenician and Roman ruins to more recent (18th century!) discoveries. Incredible - and free! Only drawback was, we could have spent much longer down there:)

Wow ... 2,500 years of Lisbon history in one small spot. Many tourists walk right by this museum and never know the treasures it holds. Offered by Millennium Bank at their location near the arch and main square. The bank discovered these ruins during an early 90s renovation project and decided to preserve them and make it publicly available. Can only be visited via a free, guided tour. An interesting and well-documented brochure also is provided with the visit.

Pre booking for the 3pm English tour meant going there in the morning, being sent around the corner to find the entrance and popping in.
That gave time to go to the Roman Theatre, have a great coffee and lunch at Copenhagen Coffee Lab in Alfama and wander back down the hill.
Maria is your guide.
Listen carefully and duck your head when she tells you to and learn about the fish sauce trade and the pre and post Roman history.
When you tread the streets of Lisbon you’re walking on history.

My wife found the museum on the net and booked in advance because that is the only way to ensure you are ona tour. Our guide for this tour was Maria and she answered everyone's questions but she just happens to be an archaeologist so her interest was higher than the usual guides you get to meet. Multiple layers are exposed from the Phoenicians to the Romans and then there is even a Visgoth period burial site. Fascinating slices of history exposed and open for visitors by the generosity of BCP Bank.
