My wife and I were walking around trying to find the Fado Museum and we chanced upon this museum. It is worth visiting if you are interested in weapons and/or military history. It, of course being in Lisbon the capital of Portugal, concentrates on Portuguese military history and weaponry. Still interesting besides. The building the museum is housed is a former palace of a wealthy merchant. That in itself makes seeing the museum worth the price of admission. The displays go on forever. Everything from the Crusades to present times. If you like "Knights in Shining Armor" there is a display on that.

If visiting Lisbon I certainly recommend putting this museum on your "probably must see" list. My wife thought it very interesting too.

The interior of this building is beautiful and well worth the entrance fee of 4 euros.
The history and exhibits are a little bit confusing in no particular order but again worth seeing.
A visit will take around an hour.

Firstly the building it's occupying is worth the admission price by itself - never mind the exhibits. Must have been a royal palace at some time past.

Personally I was disappointed with how little focus there was on the Peninsular War period when Wellington spent 5 years in the country with a British army fighting the French with the excellent support of the smaller Portuguese army who performed very well under Wellington's ccommand - something they can justly be proud of. This was covered very poorly in one small room with a few relics and exhibits of this period.

Next to this was a much bigger area and more lavish with huge paintings, statues and exhibits covering the part the Portuguese played on the western front in WWI - where they certainly did not cover themselves in glory. Enough said.

The collection of weapons, arms and armour through all periods was very extensive and housed in a most impressive building.

Admission price was 1 euro! a bargain.

At a walking distance from city center, this military museum is housed in an old building. It includes possibly the biggest collection of canons in Europe. A large part of the museum is dedicated to WWI and the portuguese contribution. Nice collection of Orders, medals, uniforms and swords. The frescoes at the entrance are really unique.

Wow. That’s a museum to go to if you are halfway interested in military and old stuff. There are so many big guns, models, swords of all kind. Many with English and French description. Most amazing to me was the old-fashioned setting, just great, no pseudo, posteriori smart explanations of good vs. bad, no multimedia, no war sounds, no doomsday displays: just breathe the smell of past centuries in rooms that are incredibly beautiful (could easily be a palace) and squeaky floor boards.
Go on Sunday morning and it’s free.
