A very interesting building with a very dark past. Only €3 total for a family, so very cheap. There is a mountain of information provided from before up until the present day history of the building. Very interesting. There are multiple toilet facilities and a cafe also on the 4th floor.

We had planned to visit this museum after seeing it on Trip Adviser but not even the taxi drivers knew it! If visiting, be very specific about the address and mention that it is beside the Sé Cathedral. It is a very interesting look into Portugal’s past under the dictatorship and is well worth a visit. The building is an old prison and entrance costs 3€ per person. There is also a half hour film to watch which was quite harrowing about a case of sleep torture. There are also English speaking guides around. Highly recommended.

There is a lot of information in this museum. A lot. But it is all very good and well translated in to English. I️ spent hours reading on the various sections of the museum. From the resistance publications to the fights in the colonies it was comprehensive. The timeline of presentation jumped around a bit so it was sometimes difficult to connect stories and sections together. Until this museum I️ had a limited knowledge of the details of the dictatorship in Portugal but that was remedied today. Take your time here and even though it is small plan for at least two hours.

You will learn a lot about Twentieth Century Portuguese history here, the complete story of the development of the Republic and the Dictatorship that followed. Very sad and disturbing evidence of the secret police and torture, all displayed in the former prison where people were tortured and died. And the history of the downfall of Salazar.

I, too, just happened on this museum and am amazed it is not in any of the standard guidebooks. I have been in Lisbon for four weeks and I would say it has been one of my most memorable experiences. Upon entering you are immersed in the world of protest, free speech, the world of dictatorships, and prison life. That it is in the prison that, for centuries, housed the disenfranchised and political protestors gives one a sense of being intimate with their suffering and goosebumps. The displays are powerful and well organized and written (I was impressed with the English translations, which is not always the case in many museums). The contemporary printed ephemera and realia stand tribute. To its credit, while focusing on Salazar, it does not ignore the country's colonial misdeeds or other countries' complicity (the CIA gets mentioned at one point). I could go on at length. I cried after leaving.
