got into this by accident. after tour of the elevator, we wandered out by the church and suddenly say this place with the ceremonial guard at the entrance. found out that it was free to enter, so we went in with low expectations.
we were surprised with the great layout and care taken to display the history of the revolution, history of the different wars and Portuguese national guard history.
a very interesting journey through the pages of European history. must visit. may not be on the tourist itinerary, but certainly take time to visit, specially if visiting with young children. they will enjoy the military display and the equipments, vehicles and the stories to be found here.

The former Carmo convent houses the HQ of the National Republican Guard as well as this small but perfectly formed museum. It has the full history of the Guard and its various amalgamations and the exhibits are well picked.
Especially interesting for European historians is the history of the Carnation Revolution, which this building played a significant part in.
The bonus is that is free. There are no refreshments available inside but right outside is a square with numerous cafes.

Located in barrio Alto this free museum is worth a visit. I was especially intested in the Guard's involvement in the 1974 revolution and there is an excellent display. Probably wouldn't visit if it cost and then would have missed a great display.
There is even a uniformed sentry outside who is happy to have his picture taken.

First of all the entry is free, the museum shows the history of the guard. Went in after seeing the guard on sentry duty in a fine dress uniform. Museum set in a small square next to Carmo convent.

The National Republican Guard was an important part of the Carnation Revolution, and this small museum gives a good overview of its broad history. The museum is worth a visit if you're interested in modern history. It is also free to enter.

We were wondering what this building was when we passed by and saw the solders standing on guard. It was a museum that offered free entrance and was about the revolution of the 70's, the 'Red Coronation'. There was a nice display of uniforms from several eras.
