A fascinating history of the GNR in this museum, next door to the also wonderful Convento do Carmo. For a little over €2 you learn of the founding and evolution and change of the GNR. It is interesting to learn how it defended the republic against the monarchy, how Salazar made a fundamental change in its operation, and how it defended Caetano against the army in 1974. Go visit, it's well worth it

The Museum of the National Republic Guard was small but informative and interesting, and we learned a lot about the history of Portugal and the National Police Force.

Many would shrug off this museum and simply gawk at the guards outside. That would be a mistake since this museum is a good introduction to the guard, to the neighborhood, and to the recent history of Portugal. The displays can seem a bit chaotic (well, they are). Start by seeing a brief (subtitled) film when you enter, that will provide a good content for understanding the guard, past and present, and for the displays. Note that each contains a date, so look up for that. The captions are in Portuguese and English. There is much said and unsaid in this interesting little museum, well worth the time and the modest admission cost.

Went here when we went up the Santa Justa lift. The convent beside also worth a look and we were here in time for changing of the guard. Not exactly Buckingham Palace but a small ceremony when the sentry changes.

Located next to the Carmo Archaeology museum this inexpensive museum (3€) gives an excellent history of Portugal’s military history. Portugal was a strong ally of Britain during WW I, remained neutral in WW II ( but surreptitiously helped both sides), had several revolutions - the latest in 1974. Well displayed items with text in English. Gives a visitor a good background in Portugal’s military past and present. Interesting examples of old weapons, motorcycles and uniforms. Some video presentations as well.

Small museum with different status related to police and Army.
The nice is the replica of Prison,Army defense line,...
