Be prepared to stand in line for tickets if you haven’t bought them online in advance. You have to have a ticket to get in to the park. The castle is beautiful. It feels like walking in a fairytale. We were here April 4 and it was crowded with people. I don’t know how it will be in the high season.
Nice view over Sintra and Lisbon.
We took the train (30 min) from Lisbon. We paid €10 for two persons, round trip. It’s a pretty long walk from downtown Sintra to the castle but a beautiful walk-in the mountain. Have good shoes and water.

We walked to Palácio da Pena through Pena park from old Sintra and it took us a while (we had 3 children in tow). The path up to the park is also beautiful, very lush (but also steep). There was a huge line (cue) to buy tickets to the park, so I recommend purchasing them online. Once we reached the palace again there was a big line to get in. All in all I think we spent more time cueing than actually inside the park/palace. By then the kids were really tired and had no interest in exploring the palace.
In hindsight we would’ve bought tickets online to the park only (you can still walk outside the palace) instead of the combined ticket (park & palace). A beautiful place but get there early in order to enjoy it.

I was in Lisbon with several girls - either daughters or nieces - and all of them wanted a day trip. My wife had visited Sintra a month earlier and recommended it. The train trip out from Lisbon was super easy and inexpensive. The town of Sintra is easy to navigate on foot so long as you have a map and someone with a sense of direction and good map-reading skills. We had breakfast at Cafe Saudade, which was convenient to the train station and good food and service. After the cafe you will want a good walk, and we chose to walk up to the Pena castle. Don't be intimidated, unless you are in a wheelchair or use a walking cane you can walk the entire way and feel better for it. Once we got to the ticket booth we waited maybe twenty minutes tops to buy tickets. Then we waited another few minutes in the admission line. You can buy water inside the gate, and bathrooms are readily available inside as well. They have a pretty cool gift shop, one of the better museum gift shops I found in Spain and Portugal. Keep in mind that whatever you buy you will be carrying on a rather long adventure. You can choose a variety of options inside the park including miles of hiking over easy trails but with a lot of elevation gain. We visited the Pena Palace first, then walked through a reasonably small portion of the park in order to get to the Moorish castle ruins. Plan on a couple of hours at least, and I recommend more. Don't rush it. Wear good walking or hiking shoes. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen. Expect the temperature and wind to be colder and stronger than in Lisbon. If you can, bring a picnic and plan to spend more time in the park, it is beautiful and the crowds thin out anywhere distant from the castle and Moorish ruins. The views are quite nice, binoculars might have been good to have though I enjoyed it all nevertheless. We were there in late March and the weather was great for the exertion. Plan for the better part of a day to get to Sintra, do the castle, and get back. Don't make dinner reservations in Lisbon before 10pm.

It is beautiful indeed outside but beware this place is crowded on major holidays. Not recommended if you have old people as the walk going up is really tiring. Or pay the bus for roundtrip at around 3 euros. Bring umbrella during rainy season

There is a cafe at the castle

We really enjoyed our time at the Pena Palace, the colours of the building and the views are amazing. It was very busy by the time we were leaving I can’t imagine being there during the height of the season it was difficult trying to take photos without random people in them.
The gardens are lovely.
