Tivoli Palacio de Seteais
Ranked #2 of 15 Hotels in Sintra
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 1 August 2017

By and large, excellent in all departments. The hotel occupies one of the most beautiful small palaces in Europe, rococo, 1770 and of outstanding architectural merit outside and in. Service was very good upstairs and downstairs by staff who stay for the long term and feel like a family in charge. The restaurant was fine but its menu did not change over a two week stay, Gorgeous park and views. Not remotely suitable for young children, nor for groups.

The hotel is beautiful and well located (2min walk from the Quinta de Regaleira), but what makes the hotel truly exceptional is the service. Always, and pro-actively, happy to help; never intrusive but always there. If you like grand hotels with all the chichi they provide, this is your thing.

I've never been so torn on how I rate a Hotel. Let me begin by giving the positives. On arrival at this beautiful, stately 18th Century Palace we were greeted so very warmly by Pedro & ushered into a very Grand room where we were offered hand towels & a cold jug of traditional lemonade. Pedro was exceptional with how he handled the check-in. Our luggage was whisked away & taken to our room promptly. Pedro enthusiastically showed us to our room which seemed like a lot of stairs, corridors, passing through sitting rooms, stopping to see a very old Harpsichord, up another set of stairs & finally arriving at No 26. The room was very spacious, with fresh flowers, complimentary Port wine, Portuguese tarts & bottled water. We had our own very large balcony, one side looking out to Pena Palace & the other to the sea. The swimming pool has undergone renovation & looks beautiful along with their new Spa. So what is wrong.....
The rest of the Hotel is so very tired & in need of refurbishment, I kept thinking Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette may pop out of a room at any time! Please bear in mind we paid €630-00 per night, so I expected Luxury Hotel especially as it's rated 5 star.
The photos make it look amazing, but it is in need of many repairs. However the staff are wonderful, the food delicious & everybody tries so hard to look after you, they deserve the highest rating possible.

There are not many hotels like the Tivoli Palacio de Seteais where guests are treated like royalty and not just customers. The only other hotel that I have stayed in with this level of personal service is Raffles in Singapore. The staff are always there to open a door, help with anything you need and always greet you by your name. How do they remember? Our room was enormous, the beds were very comfortable and everything you need is provided, even your own coffee machine and fridge. I agree that it is somewhat old world, but that adds to the experience, and there are modern conveniences as well, such as WiFi. We had an early morning flight out from Lisbon and missed breakfast, so they gave us a breakfast take-away to eat at the airport. Breakfast is not a buffet, but served to order by the waiter. The hotel is located outside the centre of Sintra in extensive grounds, but only 5-10 minutes walk from the old part of the town and bus stops outside.

Room Tip: We just had a basic room on the first floor with a view of the front gardens, and it was enormous.

The way travel must have been for the 1% of an earlier generation. Nothing modern intrudes, though it's all luxurious; old world luxury. So close to the hubbub of Central Sinatra, but the flip side, with no crowds, noise, madness of the (rather incredible) town of Sinatra. Once parked, take cabs to town or up to the palace (visible but UP, UP, UP the mountain). Do NOT drive anywhere.
The hotel has a magnificent pool as well and the breakfast was the most sumptuous and delicious I've ever experienced. The figs....wow!

Wonderful stay at this luxury hotel. Truly unique experience. We went for a wedding, which was perfectly organised with superb food and a memorable reception on the terrace with the sea view. The pool and welcome drink of port were also highlights.

Great place to stay, road from the village very narrow, two way with pedestrians and buses, not an easy drive. Lovely room, small badly lit bathroom. Great staff and breakfasts were the highlights of our stay in the hotel.
