Don't drive, much to difficult to find parking. Also, like most sites near Sintra, wear walking shoes as much of the trip is up hill and rocky. This site was completely restored by James T Knowles for the Francis Cook family. Not only is the building beautiful, but the surrounding park is full of exotic trees, plants and resulting gardens. It is a days trip with a packed lunch and time to walk the many trails surrounding the Palace of Monserrate.

This was one of the most happy places I ever saw. We were lucky and a wedding was about to start, so we could here music from the park. The park is charming, especially the cactus part where you see the ruins of the old chapel. The roses garden was not in a good shape.

During summer it is the most quiet option in the area, since it is located further than the monuments "down town". The gardens will take you around 60-90minutes to walk around, although i didn't find it something special. The castle is nice although the interior has nothing apart from the building itself.

You'll be able to visit this park if you buy a ticket for Quinta da Montserrate. It's very big and very beautiful,it's like a botanical garden, there are species from differents areas of the world.

This is a nice palace and certainly an incredible garden. The landscape is amazing and they have regional plants and micro climates that are worth visiting and exploring. I thought the actual Palace was beautiful but not worth more than 30 minutes to explore. The whole place is an incredible garden.
