I rated it as very good, mostly because we have no better one in Portugal... If compared with others all over the world, it is just average. TAP, the Portuguese airline is very well represented there, with a permanent exhibition. Everything from seats to uniforms is on display. To me the highlight is a DC3, that before belonging to TAP, had a very interesting past, including participating on D-day, dropping para-troopers over Normandy. It's interior is now restored, all thanks to volunteers. Several military aircrafts are on display, and mush is told about the colonial war fought in Africa. The admission price is very cheap. Some pieces can only be visited inside with the presence of a military person, and that is very annoying. The museum clearly is short on staff.

For telling the story of aviation from the Portuguese perspective, the Museu do Ar does the job phenomenally well. When you walk in, you begin a timeline from the first "birdman" to jump off an igreja, and the "manifesto" of the Portuguese Leonardo da Vinci, and then on through the aircraft that played critical roles in the development of aerial transport in Portugal and through its colonies in Africa and Brazil. Their C-47 (Douglas DC-3 military variant) is on prominent display with a full interpretive "center" showing the provenance of the airplane and its role within the Imperial Line (to Africa) and its restoration. Being a student of aviation history, and of the Douglas DC-3 in particular, I learned much from the artifacts on display. There are several rare aircraft on display here as well...gems that are worth seeking out. And don't miss the aircraft on outdoor display as well! The museum is free, and open every day but Monday. If you would like to tour inside the C-47, visit anytime but the lunch hours (12:30-2:30), so that one of the Forca Area personnel will be on hand to guide you.

If you are interested in aviation and its history, this is the place to go.

Situated on an active airbase in a modern building with interesting "things"/airplanes,simulators etc to see.

Information and artefacts about the Portuguese airforce and also about TAP...

If you want to go inside the DC3 then go to the entrance and a friendly serviceman will come with you.

We found it interesting that there was an air museum here and we went in. But frankly you don't come to portugal to spend time for this, there is so much unique local things to see. I can imagine someone mechanically interested will love this place.
