A sunny Tuesday in late October and a chance to visit the Museo D'Air at Sintra Air Force Base No.1.

The sign for the museum and air base led us to the museum a few kilometres to the North East of Sintra old town. You can't miss the entrance road to the base and museum as there is the dramatically posed jet trainer at the end of the road. The actual Museum is behind a new façade and looks very smart. There is an expansive car park, which at the time of our visit contained one car.

Inside, the lone Air Force member of staff was very helpful in explaining where we could visit. There were no more than three other visitors during our 90 minute visit. The entrance fee was ridiculously cheap for the museum 3 Euro for adults and 1 Euro for students.

The museum has several halls including a couple of areas dedicated to the Portuguese national airline TAP.

At weekends and holidays there is a café snack bar with access to a small outside terrace where you can watch the training aircraft go off on their sorties. When the snack bar is closed, there are vending machines for snacks , cold drinks and ice creams. From this point you can also see the handful of external exhibits.

A medium sized museum that has enough items of interest to keep the whole family happy. Highlights included a Beech Kansan, Avro Cadet, Nord Noratlas and a Farman biplane among the 35+ aircraft on display. There were several nose sections (including a 707 and Super Constellation) and instructional pieces.

There is an upstairs area dedicated to the nostalgia of travelling with TAP during the 1960's and 1970's including uniforms, ephemera and equipment.

Near the front entrance is a small shop selling books, magazines, models and clothing. I really could not understand why the museum was not busier.

Thank you for your comment and for your visit. Some days we have less visitors but it must have been a pure coincidence, because in 2017 we had more than 50 thousand visitors. Hope to see you again.

Took an uber to visit this museum while in Sintra, not a huge exposition but definitively interesting and oriented towards Portuguese history of aviation. An employee , Mr Correra ,saw me struggle to understand the posters (written in Portuguese) come randomly and gave me an hour tour of the museum with a lot of info , had a great talk about aviation with him!

Thought it will be bigger and will have more modern era plans but it was nice anyway. Beautiful place for aircrafts lovers. Plans in a great condition. Little sad that not all of the descriptions are in English.

We went there with 7 y.o. kids and it was fun. It is cheap, just 3 euro and there are a lot of interesting planes. The museum is bright, clean and modern. We spent 1,5 hours there and would recommend it.
