A classic bakery/pastry shop in Sintra. The pastries are delicious and worth a visit. A must-try are the travesseiros da Piriquita

Piriquita is a traditional sweet shop in Sintra that was funded in 1862. Piriquita is known for its Travesseiro, Pastel Cruz Alta, Nozes Douradas and Queijadas. All of them are great. Although the Travesseiro is the egg-almond pastry that made Piriquita famous, I prefer the Pastel cruz alta, the Pastel de sintra and the Nozes douradas. The are delicious.

After doing a day trip to Sintra with friends from Australia, they had mentioned about a bake shop they heard about called Piriquita. We walked around town found this gem and glad that we did. I purchased the renowned travesseiros or the pillow pastry which is made of almond and egg cream filled puff pastry. The taste is unbelievable, since it came out of the oven before I purchased it, it was still warm, I ate it too quick on the train back to Lisbon. Wish I would’ve purchased more to take home to the states to share!

We enjoyed coffee and the wonderful traditional Sintra pastries - one called little pillows (which is puff pastry filled with egg cream) and the other little round tart filled with sweetened cheese & sprinkled on top with cinnamon. Service was excellent and there was a great place to sit and warm up out of the rain.

Queijadas de Sintra and Pasteis da Cruz Alta are the two Sintra specialties our Portuguese friend ordered for us, along with excellent coffees. Over 150 years old, it's worth the splurge in calories after hours climbing and hiking around Sintra. Enjoy!
