Had a lovely relaxing week in the Lavender apartment. Everything you could ask for and total peace and quiet (well except for the dogs.... Madeira has a lot of them!)
The owners were very helpful and they have done a great job restoring this fabulous old building which is full of character. Situated in a nice residential area but within easy walking distance to some very good restaurants. Would highly recommend.
Orchid is one of Quinta Esperanca's
five apartments that all offer individual accommodation, themed furnishings and a trademark picture postcard view over Funchal harbour.
Of the five, Orchid probably has the most traditional, mature feel. Dark wood. Chandelier lighting. A fashionably retro fabric screen dividing the bed area from the circular dining table, glass display cabinet and writing desk.
It's just one of the themes that the owners - Helena and Roberto - have created as their labour of love continues to restore, refurbish and reinvent this 1930's building. It looks out over Funchal old town's resurgence as an antidote to the flashy hotel complexes and designer retainers out west beyond the harbour.
And Orchid is the quinta's only apartment to have its own private balcony - separated from the beautiful communal balcony by a pair of latched louvre doors.
That's why we chose it. And yes, in my most antisocial 'breakfast' moments, it gave me the same magnificent view without the risk of having to meet or talk to anyone. I need moments like that ... my wife is far better and chattier in the mornings.
But did the offer of total privacy stop us from taking our dinner through to the communal balcony? Oh no! We made good use of both.
They gave us the chance to watch the skies darken and the town lights flicker on over bottles of wine with meat, cheese and sweet cakes from the local shops.
From there you can watch the world go by - or Funchal at any rate. See the Porto Santo ferry pull out in the morning as the church bells ring out, the streets warm up, and the fresh croissants go down.
Look down and you will see the quinta's mango, banana, citrus fruit trees trees and the bougainvillea arbour that screen the swimming pool in the beautifully manicured gardens.
And if you're not hooked by then, maybe you never will be.
The hours spent trawling the Internet for a rental property with heart and style in Funchal was well worth the effort. My friend and I stayed in the Lavender Apartment for nine nights and in our opinion was the best, although all the apartments are wonderful, especially the orchid apartment. The lavender apartment opened out onto its own paved terrace and was very private. We enjoyed many lunches with local wine and bread bought from a small supermarket and wonderful bakery just a short walk away and the old town of Funchal was only a ten minute walk away where we sampled the delights of local food. The garden has lots of nooks and crannies where you can escape for a quite read or siesta. Roberto and Helena, the owners of this beautiful retreat were welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. We will certainly be returning next year. Many thanks for re-juvenating two women that needed a rest!!
Lovely place to stay. Not surrounded by other hotels or apartment blocks. Above the old town. Bus stop right outside. Studios very comfortable. Lovely outside areas. Fantastic shared balcony looking down on to the town and harbour. Easy with a car to get from here around the island.
It's difficult to know exactly what to say about this wonderful quinta that hasn't been said already, but I will tell you that the apartment,Orchid, was fully equipped I never had to buy a thing, even coat hangers were of a high quality, an item which I'd considered bringing from the UK but no need, truly everything has been thought about in great detail, beautiful glasses ,crockery, cutlery this was all of a high standard.
I've only stayed in hotels when travelling abroad, but have got to say, that this place has changed my mind about ,'Self Catering'. It's great,I agree with everything that anyone has said about this place, with the exception of one, maybe, !
Buses, taxis are plentiful, and a wonderful Butcher, grocer, and baker are only a 2 minute walk away, other clients have said about the views, gardens, quietness, and friendliness of the hosts Helena and Roberto, and will only add that all this is true, thanks for reading this, and just book it,you won't be disappointed ....honest

This beautiful property lovingly restored to a high standard by owners Helena and Roberto, is the perfect place from which to enjoy Madeira. We stayed in Orchid apartment which has stunning views from its balcony over Funchal towards the harbour. The location is excellent, away from the busy tourist area, and close to the old town with an easy walk to the sea front. The apartments and gardens are all beautifully renovated (we saw inside several of them) and very well appointed, and the owners are very helpful, friendly and welcoming. Altogether a lovely tranquil place to stay, and we are already making plans to return.

We had a lovely stay for one week in the Magnolia apartment which looks out and over Funchal. Breakfast outside in the sun on the quiet patio made the whole experience even better. Our friends stayed in the next apartment and we enjoyed several BBQ's in the evening sun. Our hosts were very helpful with their local knowledge and an added bonus is that the 31 and 31a buses stop right outside the door whether you are down into town or up the botanical Gardens. A real taste of life in Madeira.
