We spent a few days here in February with a group and think it one of the nicest hotels we have stayed in. First class food, spacious and comfortable bedrooms with large bathroom. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The situation is great as the hotel overlooks some beautiful gardens with views across to the sea beyond. It is well away from the noise of Funchal but just a short bus trip away if you want to go shopping. In addition the hotels has a courtesy bus.

The pool could do with refurnishment but swimming with such a lovely view made up for it. We hope to return.

Room Tip: All rooms have lovely views. Best perhaps not to be near the lift which is a bit noisy.

We stayed at the Quinta do Monte in February 2012. The location is beautiful overlooking the hotel's own gardens and Funchal beyond. The rooms are comfortable, facilities good and the hotel generally attractive. It is quiet and peaceful but a bit remote from the town, though there is a courtesy bus during the day. The people are very helpful and friendly, especially the reception staff. I would be very positive about the hotel in general.

The big negative sadly is the restaurant. We ate two dinners there costing 90 and 100 euros respectively, including a bottle of wine. We ordered fish dishes from the a la carte menu since Madeira has a deserved reputation for these. In retrospect not a wise choice since there were only a dozen or so guests dining - the chef's recommendation would probably have been better. What we got looked like various frozen fish items fried up or in one case dropped in a broth made (i guess) with a fish stock cube. We subsequently ate in town at the Restaurante do Forte and Lareira Portuguesa which were cheaper and much better. Maybe when the hotel is full in the higher season the restaurant will be better, giving it the benefit of the doubt!

Room Tip: Ask for the top floor for best views. All rooms face over the gardens.

Four times in ten years and we have now had enough. This place has gone to ruin. The rooms are shabby, noisey and need much upgrading. The food is just plain awful and the management clueless. The pool is filthy, slimy and the jacuzzi plain disgusting.
We did our best to try and enjoy the holiday but the noisey rooms (lift motors and no insulation) lack of parking (my car was damaged) and overall dismall atmoshere that pervaded the entire place made this impossible. At £110 b&b we expected the best.
Just look at the photos for an idea of why this place is just sooooo bad.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere

We were at Quinta do Monte in June-July 2011. If you want to be out of the beaten track, here you have a great place. The location, out of Funchal is quiet and peaceful. And you are only 10 min away from the city driving. The rooms and facilities are very good (maybe the swimming pool could have extended hours) with a wonderful garden. The service is exquisite, both at reception or the restaurant. No a single bad point in our stay, so we intend on coming back this year!

Superb architecture! the historical Quinta surrounded by the crescent of the modern hotel with almost over-sized rooms, sunny balconies in February and a gorgeous look at the huge park with gigantic trees and flowers in blossom while it is wintry at home, sloping gradually down to the Atlantic Ocean, located in the nostalgic village of Monte, the asylum of the dethroned Austrian Emperor. Gourmet food served in the glassed in amphitheatre of the restaurant at reasonable prices, a lovely tea house in the garden. For the third time I spent a wonderful recreative week in this quiet paradise in February without going down to noisy Funchal once. And I will do so again next year. Pensioners, pack your suitcases, when the winter is getting on your nerves. Spend a rejuveniling week in this jewel of a hotel.

Looking at other reviews I assume we were unlucky in visiting this hotel in low season but our experience is that this is a four star not a five star hotel; most of the extras that make the difference are missing. We have just visited at a time of year when the place was almost empty. Visitors were missing and so were the staff. At no time were there more than three other couples at dinner or breakfast. The bar didn't open before dinner, unless you went in search of somebody or waited; we waited 20 minutes after arriving in the bar at 6.30 one evening. The quality of service in the restaurant was highly dependent on who served you. We had good service for two nights of our stay on poor service on the other. Food was similarly patchy; one good meal, one average and one poor. We were offered a beverage tray in our room; thats great, except that the milk wasn't changed over three days and by the time we left it had completely separated. The pool was closed during our stay too. On the other hand the single receptionist/concierge was impressive. The setting is wonderful and the transfer bus down to Funchal, fifteen minutes away, was reliable. The alternative of the cable car is very expensive.

32 years ago we thought Madeira sounded the place for our honeymoon but our finances would not allow, now with family grown up and financially self sufficient the time came to treat ourselves. We were not disappointed.
Preferring countryside to city we opted to stay up the hill in Monte at the Quinta do Monte. This is a truly lovely hotel set in gardens with views over the city to the sea. The staff are charming and welcoming, the accommodation clean, tidy and comfortable, breakfast is a veritable feast of a continental buffet and hot food, although we did not partake of the restaurant meal in the evening, we had very enjoyable meals in the bar (although eating off our knees was a little tricky). The pool is quiet and in a pleasant area of the grounds.
The hotel is accessible to the cable cars, and local bus services and therefore the rest of Madeira is in reach - even on Sundays. We enjoyed walks from the hotel both up the pilgrim route to Our Lady of Monte and along the Levada de Touros to Camacha, however these would not be suitable for anyone with compromised mobility.

Room Tip: All rooms have garden view with a balcony, 4th floor gives view of the sea and access to the pool
