We arrived at the Mimosa with low expectations, having read a lot of reviews. On first inspection the hotel appeared clean and tidy. Our room was what I would expect for 3* and the maid service excellent. On closer inspection, a lot of the hotel is tired and worn, rough edges around the pool, some old stains on carpets and soft furnishings; nothing that would spoil the holiday. The food however, was a great disappointment.. I have seen on previous comments the management of the hotel say that mainly polish and English people stay at the Mimosa, this was not reflected in the food choices, the food was abundant in quantity but lacking in choice and quality .. a strange mixture of foods were presented thus it was damned near impossible to fashion a meal, if you wanted stewed pork, with sea shells and sprouts with a squid salad then you were in luck ;)
The hotel is a budget hotel.. but even so, simply thinking through which foods were served together would make a huge difference... spaghetti was served at lunch (no sauce) and the meat balls at dinner?
Breakfast and lunch are served in the pool bar, tables were not laid and staff there were slow and uninterested.. so much so, the breakfast had been eaten before a teacup was located. I don't know if it is a cultural thing, but the food was always, almost warm, never hot. The bacon resembled beef jerky.. so squares of ham and cheese seemed to be the best option.
Lunch, looked a little bit like it was the left overs from the previous evenings dinner.. dinner was downstairs in the next hotel.. staff never offered us drinks and although they replenished the closhes frequently.. sadly it wasn't with anything enjoyable. We ended up eating lunch and dinner out for the last 4 days as we couldn't stomach the all inclusive food. The staff seemed to favour the non AI guests and on more than one occasion, myself and my family felt like second rate guests.. table service was offered to the non AI guests, cracked, chewed and dirty plastic glasses were the order of the day for the AI guests. There is nothing that passes for entertainment on offer in the hotel, each evening for 1 hour..something occurred, bingo, old man playing a saxophone etc.. wasn't entertaining.. I felt like the hotel was actively discouraging guests from hanging around. Staff were hit and miss... barman could be smiling one minute, snarling the next. Pool was freezing btw... though Madeira itself is stunning.. and there are some amazing eateries nearby.. We got a taxi back from funchal each day €8-10, as the hill is extremely steep and not for the faint hearted, such a shame there is no courtesy bus (as there is with other hotels)
All in all.. reasonable place to sleep, but don't go all inclusive and don't expect to be entertained. We would go back to Madeira, but would probably book one of the Pestana group hotels

We booked a week away with Thomson (TUI) and wanted something reasonably priced for our first ever all-inclusive one. Although I wouldn't say their definition of all-inclusive covers a lot, it wasn't really as bad as most people make out in their reviews. Drinks were local - beer, vodka, rum, fruit liqueurs, however there were no cocktails included which is a shame. The food choice was very limited, although it was cooked fresh for every meal and it was in fact delicious.
The hotel itself could definitely do with an upgrade, as the furniture and appliances are very outdated and not modern at all, but I cannot complain about cleanliness - our room was spotless every single day. Location-wise, the hotel is brilliantly situated only a short walk from the Lido, various shops and bus stops into central Funchal (10 minutes) and also some great pubs, bars and restaurants should you choose to eat out of the hotel complex.
Staff seemed pleasant enough, although they never went out of their way to offer brilliant service, which is what you expect from an all-inclusive holiday, which really disappointed us. Worth bearing in mind that there is little to no entertainment in the hotel. Lastly, extremely disappointed with the ice-cold non-heated swimming pool which hardly anyone used, although the indoor heated pool & jacuzzi area was quite nice.
Madeira is a gorgeous island with plenty to offer and we would return in a heartbeat, though we would definitely choose to stay somewhere else. All in all, if you're after a quiet and relaxed holiday, in a cheap but OK hotel so you can go out and see the island in the daytime, then Mimosa will do.

Room Tip: Room on top floor (11th) had stunning views!

Thank you for your review of our Hotel Mimosa. We take great pride in the cleanliness of our hotel and friendliness of our staff. We are happy to not that you found the food served as fresh and delicious! Our chef tries hard to please many nationalities. We hope you will give us another chance to please you on your next visit to Madeira.

This hotel is by far the worst hotel you could ever check in to. This is listed as a 3-star hotel, we went all-inclusive with TUI, worst decision ever, dirty plastic glasses and very few disgusting food options

We were very disappointed with this hotel but mainly because of the quality of the food. It was rated 3* when we decided to go, but have been to Thomson 3* before and have been satisfied with the quality knowing it wouldn't be plush but the food good. At The Mimosa however it was bland and resembled a bad school canteen. The rooms were ok and clean, the pool area was ok although not enough blue beds to put on the sun beds.

We stayed at Dorisol Mimosa for 5 nights, and arrived home yesterday! It's part of a chain of 3 hotels which are next door to each other. On the whole the hotel is great, the staff are really friendly and the downstairs is modern and comfortable. The rooms could be seen as 'basic' but they are perfectly comfortable and functional. We had a room with a built in kitchen and big fridge which was really useful. The only downside was the room didn't have air conditioning, but if you left the balcony door open at night it didn't really matter. The pools are great and really clean, and there are plenty of sun loungers.

We weren't all inclusive but we got breakfast each morning, which was pretty good. If you've been travelling around Europe then this hotel offers the standard continental breakfast. Breads, cake, hams, cooked breakfast option, lots of fruit with yoghurt and honey.

We really enjoyed our stay and it's located near shops and small 'spar' supermarkets and about 20/30 mins from the centre of Funchal.

Would stay here again! :)
