It’s a perfectly good four star hotel, with some peculiarities. Lovely rooms, great views, good service, etc, but its out of town location can be a problem unless you like walking steeply uphill for quite some distance. The courtesy minibus doesn’t run at night, and a taxi into town or to the Lido area costs 7 or 8 euros.

Best bet is to walk steeply downhill to the Lido area, which has some decent restaurants, and get a taxi back. Walk towards town for a few hundred yards and you will see some steps leading down by a house - don’t worry, they lead to a public path - and just head downwards, across one main road until you come to another, where you turn right. About a ten minute walk.

The hotel itself is actually two buildings linked by a bridge, which can be confusing when you are trying to locate the pool and the restaurant. If you are a sun worshipper the pool is best in the morning and early afternoon, since as the day wears on the sun moves behind the buildings.

Breakfasts are very good, plenty of choice, and the multi lingual egg chef provides some entertainment, producing delicious omelettes in seconds.

It seems the default room configuration is twin beds, but if you ask they will join them into a large double. The downside of that is the duvet is then too small. There is a well stocked minibar at reasonable prices. Don’t miss the happy hour in the cocktail bar where prices are 50% between 6 and 7.

The bathroom is clean and stocked with the things you don’t often need, such as shoe shine and sewing kits, whereas the room lacks the things you do need, such as a pen and a kettle. The shower is particularly good, once you work out how to switch it on.

So - views or convenient location? Up to you.

Incredible experience at this hotel on the hillside.

Arrived to find the room wasn't quite ready, however, the staff made us feel welcome & offered us a complementary drink at the poolside bar. A very nice gesture as we were tired from travelling.

The poolside bar has a nice little menu with food and drinks. The cheese and ham toastie, fries and burgers are all really good options and not too expensive.

Breakfast has lots of choice. Whether you want a quick bite to eat or a big meal, there is plenty on offer. A few of the foods changed around from day to day too. Fruits, yogurt, omelettes, beans, sausage, bacon, bread, eggs, cereal, meats & cheeses, cakes and more. Very good selection and the staff worked great to clean up and welcomed people in. Same goes for the restaurant in the evening. Lots of foods to pick & choose from in a buffet style.

The room was very spacious. Comfortable enough beds with wonderfully big pillows. The air con was a brilliant use. Bathroom had some nice extras such as shower gels, soaps, sewing kit, shower cap & tissues. Shower/bath, toilet - even a bidet All clean. 2 chairs and a table was a nice feature too and were relaxing to sit in. In a mountain view room, it was a superb view. Looking out onto the hills and Funchal. Very atmospheric, especially at night. Balcony with a table and a couple of chairs, it was nice to sit out now and again. TV was also in the room. Plenty of cupboards to store clothes in etc. Along with a safe (with a fee of about €11 for the week - it is quite big, big enough to fit cameras, ipads and small backpacks for example). Tea & Coffee making facilities are available at a charge of about €7.50 for a week. Mini-bar (fridge) was useful as you can have a drink or a snack and it will be charged to your hotel bill at the end. All items fair priced. There are a limited amount of sockets in the room but wasn't much of an issue.

It is quite an unusual layout of the hotel but it's fine once you get used to it. Pools looked clean and inviting. Tennis court and gym looked well maintained. There is a useful free shuttle bus service into Funchal (and back!). All you have to do is book at reception. The man driving the bus is very good and will sometimes let you on the bus back up if there is room, even if you hadn't booked or wasn't at the time you booked. It runs every day apart from Sunday. Top service.

It is possible to walk into Funchal. It is hilly so might be more of a task on the way back up. However, did it just fine. For a selection of closer restsurants and shops it is good to head down a small alley/hill which has some steps and a sign that reads "Azinhaga da Casa Branca" (next to a Levada) eventually the hill takes you to past the Savoy Gardens hotel and at the bottom you can turn left or right to find many bars, restaurants and shops.

All of the staff here were superb. All very nice and helpful. Hard working. Kept the room clean, even folded some clothes. Receptionists gave some good information out. Really marvelous service throughout the hotel. Thanks to all who worked there for making it a wonderful stay .

There is wifi throughout the hotel and it's free. Once in the room there is the wifi code provided and it worked a treat. Fantastic stuff.

A tremendous hotel with such great people and a quiet, friendly and relaxing environment.

.The view from our window was fantastic (we were at the side ) but could see Funchal ,the sea the mountains and a good firework display from one of the cruise ships one evening .The staff were very good and so good at English ,we didn't have to worry about are limited Portuguese .The free shuttle bus was easy to book and the driver (if he has room on way back and you haven't booked) will pick you up or come straight back for you ,he was wonderful. The room was clean and everything refilled each day .We had a tea/coffee making tray ,kettle, coffee ,tea, sugar ,milk etc I think 7 euros for the week ,and a very good safe around 11 euros for the week .It will hold ipad ,camera ,and small back pack .The breakfast was great lots of choice ,eggs freshly done by chef.Fresh fruit etc,as well as beans, sausage, bacon,.The pool side had a nice snack bar open till 6 pm serving food and drinks. We ate one night in the restaurant which was again help yourself and plenty of it .Its a short walk down to a good selection of restaurants and cafe's plus a supermarket .A longer walk takes you into Funchal its self (we are in our mid 60's and found no problem walking down or up ) just take it slow as the sun can be very hot !!! Pool delightful (didnt try the indoor but it looked good ) the views just breathtaking. We slept very well ,comfy beds and pillows.the aircon worked when we needed it .You could sit outside on the balcony with that lovely view .We are already looking to go back and will use this hotel with out a doubt .

Every site said that if you stay at the Panoramico you'd better be ok with walking up steep slopes...and they weren't wrong! The clue is in the name and it certainly does what it says on the tin as the views from the seaward side are just stunning; so when you get to the bit where you can book a room looking over the sea and the town...do it- its worth every penny!
My wife and I came here to celebrate a birthday with a 'nought' so we wanted somewhere quite nice. To be clear; this is not a chinzy, intimate boutique hotel...but what it is, is an efficient and spotlessly clean base with an excellent breakfast (omelets to order..!) and a great pool overlooking the bay. We loved our room which was really quiet at the end of the corridor, and we loved sitting on the balcony in the mornings. The views really are stunning and you can see for miles around. At nights you can see the lights from the town and we were here in January while all the Xmas decoration lights were still up which was magical. Sadly we were not here for the New Year fireworks which have a reputation of being fantastic!
The staff are brilliant and helpful but leave some time to consult them because it can get busy in the mornings. They have all the trip-info and at competitive prices.
You can walk down to the Lido area which is full of great restaurants but beware the steep walk back up!
They have a free mini-bus down to the town which is great while the bus stop is right outside too if you get back late.
We came here with Tui and we had a great time for a very modest price...

Room Tip: Go for a sea view.

This is a fabulous hotel in all respects. We have just returned following an amazing week's break staying at this excellent hotel. Yes... it is away from the main hub of Funchal & has annoying dogs regularly barking in the area even during the night (the latter is out of the hotel's control due to Portuguese laws on dog protection. Indeed, dogs could be heard even in the Reid's/Cliff Bay area, as we found out).... but please, please, please do not let any of this put you off booking. We did walk all the way to the Old Town once AND back & to the Lido area..... so it is manageable. Also, the courtesy bus service is wonderful as an alternative.

What you do benefit from though by being so situated is constant stunning views including the mountains, Funchal, the cruise ships, sun rises, Reid's/Cliff Bay and more. You can never tire of just admiring the view.... it is seldom as you previously saw it which makes it all the more fascinating.

The food was excellent (buffet & breakfast) & full of variety. Always at least 2 local fish dishes in the evening & I can't recall repetition of species. Praise too to the hard working/friendly/efficient staff. Diogo on egg base battled through the sniffles to produce top quality omelettes which helped set us up for the day. What a star !!

We stayed in room 322 with a full sea/mountain view. Great choice & would recommend. This clean, modern, friendly hotel is top notch. We so wish we were still there.... boy do we miss it. Cheers crew for a thoroughly memorable holiday.

Room Tip: Room 322 was superb in all respects with even an extra off bedroom plus balcony.

We stayed at this hotel from 1th to 19th September 2017. Panoramic describes this hotel perfectly being situated out of the centre of Funchal near the top of the hill and the views from most parts were superb both during the day and at night. Although facing the sea it seems to be sheltered from the wind and the pool area is a suntrap. Food was very good at both breakfast and evening meal, some food being cooked to order such as eggs at breakfast and some meats and fish at evening meal. Rooms clean and to a slightly higher standard than normally expected in a 4 star. The only problem with the hotel is that it is in a largely residential area and on a very steep hill which makes an evening stroll a little difficult. The free bus service is excellent in that it drops you right by the Christiano Ronaldo museum and it is then a flat walk along the promenade into town. The new town is like any other in Europe but the old town is a revelation. To get to it walk along the promenade to the chair lift and then head inland. In the old town many of the doors are painted with murals and it is an interesting few hours just waling around and looking at them. There are many bars and restaurants here and a fantastic atmosphere. Try the chair lift for views and tke at least one trip out to see the rest of the island. Dramatic mountains here and fantastic views. Gardens abound as you would expect and there are a couple in the new part of town which are worth a visit if only because they are free.
