“Get away from everything and relax”
Reviewed August 7, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

We stayed in a beautiful little chalet above the marina in late July. The chalet has a bedroom, bathroom, and living room with fully fitted out kitchen area (oven, hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, crockery, etc.), so it's got everything you might need. There's also a private balcony with seating for 4 and a stunning view of the river and hills.

There aren't any shops nearby, so if you don't have a car, you will need to stock up before you arrive. Having said that, Jose was only too happy to drive us to the mini mercado in Sao Joao da Pesqueira (8 km away) in his truck, and even took us to a viewpoint on the way back. The marina is only 10 minutes walk from the railway station at Ferradosa, but there are only 5 trains in each direction every day, so you can't be late! The local towns of Pinhao and Regua are nice, and have lots of shops and restaurants. There is one restaurant very close to the marina (you go past it on the way in), which serves dinner, drinks, and ice creams. It's a very nice place, mid-range prices.

The marina has everything that you might need to relax, including a swimming pool (heated by the sun), numerous hammocks (so that you can follow/hide from the sun all day), sun lougers, kayaks, a BBQ, and even a ping-pong table. One of our favourite parts was the view of the stars at night, particularly from the pier (yes, there's a pier).

We planned to go hiking around the area, but it was so hot (40 C) that we just lazed around, which was also great. Jose offers a day trip on one of his boats for €120 per boat (for however many people), which we didn't go on. The only word of caution is that you should take insect repellant and anti-histamine, as there are quite a lot of hungry mosquitos.

To conclude, if you need a holiday doing nothing at all in a thoroughly beautiful place miles from anywhere, then you really should look no further.

“chilling out in rural remoteness”
Reviewed October 2, 2012 for a stay in September 2012

We stayed here late September and had a great time. We were there to use the boats but spent a good deal of time just chilling out and enjoying the peace and quiet. The railway line is on the other side of the river and a few trains a day – plus the occasional river tour boats - pass by. These don’t disturb the peace of the area, rather, they enhance it by underlining just how quiet it is! A real pleasure was breakfasting on the chalet veranda while listening to the singing and chattering of the grape-pickers during the harvest (up to a mile away).

There are three units – a small house and two chalets. The chalets are pretty small (the house isn’t much bigger!) and basic but have the essentials required. Most welcome was the excellent shower, with plenty of hot water, and the air-conditioning unit if you sleep in the chalet and the weather is hot. You need to be self-sufficient to get the best of the area – either by boat or by walking the hills. If you come by train (the station is a ten-minute walk away) further supplies can only be got from the nearest main village (Pesqueira). By car is best but it takes as long to negotiate the windy bit from Regua as it does to get to Regua by the fast road from Oporto – there are alternatives and all reveal different aspects of the fantastic Douro countryside. Having a car means you can nip up the hairpins to the well-stocked supermarket and to some other restaurants. There is one restaurant close to the marina but its opening hours are dependent on bookings. Some great restaurants are reachable by boat.

Don’t expect entertainment and nightlife but do expect to relax and enjoy the remoteness and the peace. The site also has a small pool and a good decking area for sunbathing and socialising. We did lots of the latter – on the water and off – and it just added to the relaxation. Jose was a friendly host and added to the relaxed atmosphere.
