Samui Honey Cottages Beach Resort
Ranked #6 of 10 Hotels in Choeng Mon
Reviewed 8 May 2012

Enjoyed 3 relaxing weeks at this friendly and peaceful family run boutique hotel on the beach. Prior to booking we did read several mixed reviews on TA about this hotel and area. For a beach front cottage with breakfast included, this looked like the ideal place to escape for a few weeks.

We certainly enjoyed our stay but would not return to this property again for a number of reasons.
If you are looking for a quiet area in Koh Samui, then this is the perfect spot, especially for those with small children, as Choeng Mon Beach is a protected Bay and very shallow water with a nice sandy bottom.

* Beware of Sea Lice in the Bay! * Just do a Google search on Sea Lice, they are as annoying as Mosquitoes and do bite! This was our first encounter with Sea Lice having traveled to many tropical destinations in the world. They ruined our snorkeling trip to the Marine Park as well, the bites were nasty forcing us and about 100 other people on the tour from the water.

Here's what we enjoyed about this hotel:
1 - Small family run boutique hotel
2 - Nice infinity pool steps from the beach
3 - Individual beach front cottages or a choice of ocean view or pool side rooms
4 - Breakfast included daily at beach side
5 - Friendly pleasant staff
6 - Rooms cleaned daily with bottled water
7 - Very good in room free wifi
8 - Air conditioned rooms
9 - Small fridge in room
10 - Electric kettle for instant coffee or tea (supplied)
11 - Great value for what you receive compared to North American prices for same

Room for improvement:
With a few improvements, this quaint hotel could become a premier property and easily raise their prices without any difficulty or complaints what so ever!

1 - Curtains in our room were worn, see thru and blood stained
2 - Shower drain kept clogging and backing up daily
3 - Lounge chairs and pool area filthy (With a little effort, table and chairs, food scraps, etc., could be easily cleaned by staff working the bar)
4 - Many times we observed people come right off the beach and use the pool and help themselves to the limited number of beach loungers, without staff caring at all.

The pool and grounds were clean and tidy, but with a little extra effort, this place could be superb! Because of what we observed and experienced, unless the little things mentioned above and a few others are taken care of, we would not return to this property again. There are less expensive properties next to the beach that look very well maintained.

If we were to return to Koh Samui, our choice would be Lamai. A beautiful stretch of beach with lots of restaurants and shopping, but not crazy loud and busy like Chaweng Beach.

Room Tip: A nice selection of rooms to choose from to suit your tastes and budget. There are individual cotta...

We were given room 13 right behind the bar! Stupid to put a family there! The air conditioning unit leaked, badly. Luckily they do provide lots of towels, most went under this unit. After the 2nd night they got one of the staff to look at it. He took the cover off cleaned it and put the cover back, it didn’t do anything!

Rooms are a fair size and clean. Get pool towels.

Not a great breakfast but included in the price and you can have anything on the list. Rest of food was good though. You have to walk past another resort to get to Honey’s restaurant! Nice and quiet non intrusive music. Only one member of staff when on appears to speak English. I even had difficulty ordering a hot tea! First came out with lemonade!

Hot water for tea and coffee in the room. Couple of bottles of water in the fridge for free, make sure you take them out if you haven’t used them and want more!!

Small pool, could do with being cleaned more often as leaves in it a lot.

Beach is very busy.

No charge for use of credit card

We came back here as we liked it last year. Not much has changed but no need for that as we like it the way it is!

We absolutely love the location as it is not very busy here however close enough to Chaweng.
There are some restaurants around (we highly recommend THE ORCHID), shops, tour agencies. Easy to rent a motorbike.

Beach is lovely, breakfast served on the beach seems like living a dream! We enjoyed massage on the beach as well (ladies next to the breakfast room are amazing!).

Pool is not too big but cool water is perfect on hot days. Lounges could do with some better cleaning tho.

Bungalows in a lovely garden, rooms are cleaned daily, fresh towels daily. Staff are very friendly and helpful (no problem with moving us as to different bungalows when barking dogs on the back of restaurant didn't let us sleep).

We would love to come back here again.

Room Tip: You can choose a bungalow overlooking the beach or a garden

Location - the location is on a quieter part of an already quiet beach, at least when we were there (April 2012). If you are looking for a less busy area to stay, this is it. You can get to busier beaches and areas to go out for dinner pretty easily. The hotel offers a van service that will pretty well take you anywhere for about 400 baht ($12) one way. They tell you you can get a taxi up the road (3 minute walk or they will call one for you) for about 300 baht ($9) to get to most places.

Food - the hotel has a sister restaurant called honey seafood restaurant and it is about a 2-3 minute walk down the beach from most of the bungalows. The food here is not great, honestly, but it will do when it has to. Try and go out whenever you can. Actually, the place called Kirati next door to e east between the honey cottages and honey restaurant is a bit better for food (and in particular, the coffee. Not that the Kirati coffee is particularly good, but the honey restaurant coffee is really awful). Also, if you want to, you can order food right from the hotel pool and outdoor sitting area rather than walking down to the restaurant.. Just ask the staff for the menu, order what you want, and they will gladly walk down to the restaurant and bring the food back to you by the pool/bar.

Service - the service of the staff is amazing - really. Remember where you are though. The staff will not come over to you every 5 seconds to make sure you are okay. That is not Thai style. They will, however, be available if you need them. They are always close by, and if you need another round of drinks, just wave and smile and they will take excellent care of you.

Rooms - the rooms are very clean, and cleaned everyday. They provide new bath and beach towels daily, even if you hang them. The beds are very comfortable and have excellent mattresses. If you are very worried about privacy in your rooms, note that the rooms are surrounded by large windows that have white curtains, but even at night with the lights on inside, you can't see through them. In the room I was in, you had to be careful of reflections in the shower. The washroom was adjacent to the washroom of the bungalow next to us and since they had angled glass celings with a wall between them that did not go all the way to the ceiling, we had one instance (only at night when the lights in both washrooms were on) where you could see into the shower of the other bungalow. Wasn't a big deal and most of the rooms do not have this set up anyway.

Other
- wifi connection is good throughout the whole hotel and all bungalows
- there is a pool table (about 80 cents per game)
- The grounds are beautiful with paths and gardens and koi ponds throughout. A bit hard to navigate at night and they should probably have some lights put in along the paths.
- there is parking available and a moped or car is a good idea since the location is a bit far from the best food and busiest places. We just took taxis everywhere and it wasn't a problem though. Just tell the drivers you are at honey cottages in cheong mon and they will get you there.

Room Tip: I don't think you can really go wrong here. For more privacy, ask for a room on the second floor...

Just come back from 2 weeks staying at Samui Honey Cottages. We would definitely recommend it - here's why...

Pros:
Infinity pool with child/toddler pool - the pool is quite small but we usually had it to ourselves. By lunchtime it is shaded one end.
Staff - really friendly and helpful.
Room - cleaned daily with plenty of freshtowels. Very functional, huge comfy bed, good aircon. From what we had read we were expecting to be in a bungalow but actually were in a first floor room. This didn't bother us and we didn't ask to change but do confirm if you are wanting to be in a bungalow. They included an extra bed free of charge for our toddler.
Location - the beach was the nicest we saw (and we visited friends at 4 posh resorts whilst on Samui). Fine sand and really shallow water with trees giving shade for those wanting it. Also, you have a good choice of places to eat along the beach and in Choeng Mon.
Bar - for food and drink the setting is great. Prices are much more competitive than big resort hotels.

Cons:
Sea lice - we did feel small stings in the sea water - our toddler fussed over it and wanted to get out the sea
Taxi prices - the front desk were great organising taxis but these were more expensive than taxis our friends booked from other resorts on the island. If you use a lot of taxis it is worth walking the 5 mins to Choeng Mon main road to catch one instead.

Initially, my sister in law and I only booked for 4 nights as we intended to move further north for the next 4. However, we decided to stay the whole 8 here.

We loved the infinity style pool. The room is cleaned every day, we get two bottles of water daily, breakfast, bath towels and beach towels. The area is quiet...mostly families with young children on the beach. The staff are friendly, however, we were also surprised at how little English is understood and spoken...

We booked a 'garden view' room - ours is room 26. Not much of a garden view. The door and the wall at the entrance is all glass which means that we need to keep the curtains drawn day and night which is annoying. Forgot to mention the in room safe which is a plus for piece of mind.

Downside was the aircon - dripped water constantly and it even started spitting ice chunks out at us!

I would recommend staying here and would come back again!

Had a great stay for our 10th wedding anniversary. Rooms are spotless and contrary to an earlier review the seating and paths and everywhere are absolutely spotless too. Yes the sun beds and mats on them are old on the beach but they are so comfy and you don't see them once your complimentary and changed everyday beach towel is laid on it. The sunbeds by the pool are immaculate and the pool is always clean and a stunning view from the end of it with a beer in your hand. The rooms are rustic but immaculately cleaned every day and have everything you could possibly need, a comfy bed, sofa, fridge with 3 free bottles of water every day, coffee tea and kettle, clean towels every day and sheets changed regularly. the grounds are worked on by a small team, pruning and watering every day and the cleaners gather flowers from the gardens and make little displays in the bathroom and your room and leave flowers on your bed. Everyone from the massage girls in the hut, who thought I was hilarious because I had so many tickly spots when I had my massage, to the ground staff to most importantly the non stop hard working bar and reception staff were some of the nicest and most friendly people I have ever come across and I am well travelled. Check out the bar on Thursday between 6pm and 9pm to catch l'il Willy singing blues, swing, jazz and electro swing and playing the harmonica, he really is the best. We had no problems with anything untoward in the water, it was crystal clear, clean and as warm as a babies bath, yes you had to go out far to swim but isn't that part of the adventure? the beach is immaculate, the area is quiet with enough to keep anyone who isn't a teenager entertained, never had to fight for a sunbed and we went in high season. The little village is sweet with some nice little shops and restaurants. The best restaurant is to the left of the hotel as you come out into the village about a 15 minutes walk up the hill, 2 minutes in a taxi and is called Relax, the food is amazing and is as cheap as chips! Do go to bohput in a taxi costs £8 but is a great night out especially on a Friday at the busy night market, great fun and some great bargains to be had at the market. My husband had a cashmere suit made in the village which is a lovely suit. The best thing about the resort is the bar staff, the manager Sopa, Pa to her friends, and her assistant Boom, who doesn't say a lot but understands everything and really took a ribbing from me and Pa, they are just the most amazing people, and if you want to know anything about Thai culture, life or where to be a tourist Sopa is the one to ask, they work long hours for very little money but always have a smile on their faces. the bar prices are not cheap by Thai standards but they only use premium spirits and I never got a hangover drinking there, can't say the same for anywhere else we drank, goodness knows what they used in their cocktails, the honey bar cocktails, especially the margaritas were fantastic! All in all a fantastic holiday, special mention to new friends and drinking buds, Martyn and Waan and the fabulously funny Canadian dental nurses, you know who you are lol, also hey to Kate and Simon hope you are still enjoying your hols. and Pa....we will be back!
