We had a very warm welcome from Yanni and Eleni, their son and staff, first name terms from day one. The room whilst basic was clean and the cleaner was around most days, breakfast was a laid back affair featuring their continental breakfast and a very nice bowl of Greek yoghurt with fruit and honey, more than enough for me and the wife, although if you give them notice Yanni can prepare an omelette for you. Friday night they do a barbecue for a small price.
The complex is only small so not too busy and the grounds and pool are well maintained with well established planting making for a nice enviroment.
The apartments are about 30min walk from Agios Nikolaos, which is great for blowing the cobwebs off, although not recommended in the dark due to the lack of street lighting and the Cretan roads.
There is no bar as such, but there is a large chiller stocked with beers and soft drinks, just help yourself and fill in the honesty tab, we checked at the local supermarket and Yanni is not making much on the drinks.
Sadly the elephant in the room is the location near the main road and it's noise, enough said. If you are being dropped off by coach then the coach will drop you off road side as it cannot access the apartments, there are some steps down from the road, but the local highways department thought it was OK to put Armco barrier across the top step, fun at 2am. If that's an issue for you then consider somewhere other than Crete for a holiday..
For us though Yanni and Eleni’s hospitality more than make up for this.

We really enjoyed our week at Golden Apartments; Yanni and Eleni were great hosts, very friendly and approachable. We stayed in apartment number 5, we paid extra to have breakfast during our stay and the air con is payable locally. We were invited to their bbq one evening, it was 15 euros each and the food was delicious.
We hired a car for the duration of our visit and there was good car parking on site. At this location we found having the car invaluable.
For the star rating it was great value for money and we would definitely recommend it.

We heard all about the owners Yanni and Eleni, and how welcoming and friendly they are. Now this I can agree with wholeheartedly, their hospitality was overwhelming and they always made you feel safe and catered to at the apartments... when they were there.

Our arrival was very downhill to begin with (pun intended) as we were dropped off right beside a busy motorway, which was situated at the very bottom of a steep hill which we had to haul our luggage up to reach the apartments. When we arrived we were greeted by Giánnis’ son who was very nice and welcomed us to to the apartments. However, after introducing ourselves we were told our room number and nothing else. We had to find it ourselves and also take our own luggage up the awkward steps to the room on the second floor.

The rooms themselves were very nice and the appliances were very clean. However the beds were some of the most uncomfortable mattresses that I’ve ever slept on, and we noticed that the sheets weren’t all that clean. The bathroom on the other hand was very clean and the shower was very easy to use.

The worst aspect of these rooms which soon became a very big issue was the noise. The walls are almost paper thin and there is constant barking and roosters making noise throughout the night.

The AC was also an additional 8€ a night - which we had to enquire about on our own.

The next morning we were at the pool and went to go buy some drinks from the bar. However, there was no one there and no information about how to get a hold of the owners.

Later that day Yanni came back to the apartments and told me that the order system for drinks was a “tab - take what you want pay at the end” deal. However, there were no price lists for any drinks available, so what your final bill at the end of the holiday was, was entirely decided by Yanni.

However the major and most important issue with Golden, is the area in which it is situated. The apartments are a good 30min walk from the town, and the walk to the town itself is not a pleasant one. Many of the other guests agreed with us that the walking path to get to the main town was rather dodgy and the “path” wasn’t just for pedestrians, which meant you had to constantly look out for speeding motorcycles and cars, which often appeared.

I had very mixed feelings about my stay at Golden. The apartments themselves - at first glance - were amazing, clean and very welcoming. However, after a short stay, and the buzz of the initial arrival wore off, the cracks began to show. Poor communication between the owners and their guests, poor sleeping conditions and noise control, were amongst the main issues that we had during our stay.

As much as we loved Yanni and Eleni as people and their personalities are amazing, I am sorry to say, that as hosts - they do a very poor job when attending to their guests. And that is what truly pains me to give such a harsh review.

I do hope that Yanni and co take the constructive criticism and approve in the right areas as I truly believe Golden Apartments as the potential to be even better.

These apartments are fabulous and run by a family that can’t do enough for you. Gianni and his wife Elaini and their son Demetri are so welcoming and friendly, I would highly recommend these apartments to everyone. They are out of town so it’s lovely and relaxing but close enough to walk or get a taxi because the walk is approximately 25ish minutes.
