A friendly, exceptionally clean small complex with excellent service. Based right on the beach (which isn't to write home about- but there are plenty of fanstastic beaches not too far away if you have transport) - to the Maleme Mare staff, nothing was too much trouble. The room/studio we had was incredibly spacious (we did pay a little extra for a studio instead of just a room) and we had not one but 2 balconies overlooking the sea. The resort is very quiet (which is what we were looking for) but with about 10 or so different restaurants to choose from within walking distance. However, if you are looking for more nightlife Platanias is only about 5km away. It is very windy there but the swimming pool is protected from the wind. Altogether a really wonderful holiday.

My husband, my daughter (12 Autistic) and I had a lovely stay at the Maleme Mare.

The appartment was clean and as expected. One or two minor problems; there was no plug for either the wash hand basin in the bathroom or the kitchen sink which made washing up impossible!.

The kitchen was, however, inadequate and there is no way anyone could self cater as the cooking facilities are basic to say the least. See picture! Two electric rings on what looked like an electric version of a camping stove!

The Island does have power cuts on very hot days. Apparently when everyone switches on their aircons, the grid cannot cope and out go all the lights. We did experience one of these and watched as two Greek sparks climbed up a wooden ladder to a junction using torches and a tool box that seemed to comprise of a long bamboo stick with a hook on the end - but they got it working after three attempts!

The grounds were lovely and the two pools were of a good standard. Watch out for those Germans and Scandinavians - they do like to leave their towels on the sunbeds! NB: The English are very much in the minority in the Maleme Mare.

Our Kosmar Rep (Angela) was extremely kind and non-intrusive. She even arranged for us to go to the front of the queue in the airport so my daughter didn't have to cope with the crowds - for which we are very grateful. She was very imformative and friendly.

Maleme is a very quite resort with a pebble/shingle/sandy beach. The waves can be quite rough at times when the always present wind is strong (there are lifeguards which are not always there). The beach has some shade as there are a few trees. Not very good for snorkling. The shops sell swimming shoes quite cheaply which will protect you from the little black stinging sea urchins - if you put your foot on one they really hurt.

There are quite a few tavernas along the beach front. In particular the Estia (less than 2 minutes walk from the hotel) was consistently good and also good value for money. We didn't like the Taverna across the road - we felt like cattle being herded along in there! Further along the beach road going away from Maleme towards Chania (turn right as you face the sea) you will find a taverna (10 minutes slow walk) right on the beach which was very pleasant, good food and lots of it too.

Travelling up the road away from the beach towards the main road are some shops selling most of what you need. Along on the left hand side is a Taverna called Perasma (I think that's right) it's covered in vines and looks very pretty. Don't be fooled by its appearence! The service was poor and extremely slow (even by Greek standards). The food wasn't really worth the waiting for.

The Greek evening offered by the Maleme Mare was good fun with Greek dancing, music and food, plenty of it. The evening was very good value for money. Although we didn't see him the hotel also lay on a magician and we heard good reports about him - I believe that was free.

I would recommend the trip to Gramvousa Island. Be warned there is no shade on the beach at Gramvousa or Balos lagoon. The ship hire out sun brollies quite cheaply. The climb up to the Fortress is hot, hard and very high - not to be attempted by someone unless reasonably fit. However the view at the top is worth the effort and the Fortress is good to look round (although you don't get much time). The ship gets very crowded, but there are enough seats under the shade, provided you get there quickly!

It's worth booking a trip on the little red train that runs around. They go on a variety of lengthy trips. We only discovered this towards the end of our holiday and were sorry we hadn't found out earlier. We went on "The Grand Canyon" trip which takes you up into the mountains and through magnificent scenery. The train is covered so you are in shade and as you are travelling there is a lovely breeze. We thoroughly enjoyed it and would higly recommend it.

On the whole the Maleme Mare is a nice place to stay, and is situated in a lovely location, with good facilities around.

My husband and I were very excited about our 2 week stay here, as it was highly recommended by both our travel agent and the previous reviewers on Trip Advisor.
All I can say is that there has been some major changes in the past year at this Hotel (and this is the opinion of our Kosmar Rep!). There have been some major staff changes and the result is some very poor customer service.
My Husband and I were put in room 104, which we discovered is in the 'old block'. The room stank of damp, which we traced to a rotten cupboard under the sink. In the rotten cupbaord we found all the 'self-catering' utensils for our stay: a rotten chopping board, one fork, no knives, a small milk pan and a frying pan. We had to eat out every day because it was impossible to cook anything on the 2-ring camping stove that constituted our cooking facilities.
There was no plug for the bath (which we discovered was because previous guests forgot to turn the taps off).
We spoke to some other guests who were staying in the 'new block' and they showed us their rooms, which were actually a lot better and more like the photographs on their website. When we asked the manager if we could be moved to one of these rooms, we were told that we couldn't as these were for the German and Scandanavian guests who pay more for their holiday.
We said we were willing to pay more but they still refused to move us! As you can amagine we were bloody furious!
After a week the drains started to stink, and some other guests and ourselves complained and nothing was done, so we couldn't even sit out on our terrace.
Our Kosmar Rep tried her best , but because the company is being taken over at the moment by XL Airways, she wasn't getting paid and so seemed (understandably so) to not give us her full attention.
And Finally, the manager feels it is perfectly OK to come into your room any time he feels like it. He came in to ours when we were out one night to replace a glass table top, and moved our belongings around. When we came back and discovered this he was very indignant. As he put it "It is my hotel and i can do as i please".
Now Don't get me wrong, we made the best of it. The pool area is wonderful and the rooms are cleaned every day by some lovely ladies. There isn't much around, but if you hire a car you can go to some nice resorts in the area. like Platanias and Agios Marina.
So if you are German or Scandanavian and fancy a quiet sunshine break, then get yourselves to this hotel. But if you are British I wouldn't bother. Save your money and go somewhere where you aren't treated like a second class citizen.

Had a fab holiday at the Maleme Mare in August 2006. Things didn’t start too well as we were due to fly from Nottingham East Midlands at 0730 in the morning but ended up being transferred up to Manchester and eventually taking off at 1630. The complex was nice and clean, rooms were cleaned every day, towels and bedding changed regularly. The staff were very friendly and the location was good, we had a great sea view. The first week was quite busy around the pool areas and there was a lot of reserving sunbeds. Not much in the way of entertainment, a magician show the first week, the Greek night was cancelled but took place the 2nd week although we gave it a miss.
We visited the Water Park near Chania which my 11 year old daughter and husband enjoyed; I relaxed, with a float around lazy river a couple of times and soaked up the sun. There were plenty of places to buy snackie (fast) type food at reasonable prices. We travelled there by the little road train which was a great way to see a bit more of the area.
We also visited both the war cemeteries, the German one is a pleasant walk, around 4 o’clock when it’s not too hot. We had a trip into Chania during the day and visited the Maritime Museum which was well worth a visit. Basically we like to chill so that was about the extent of our “sightseeing” although we did spend an evening in Platanias which was very busy; it was lovely to return to the peacefulness of Maleme.
We ate out most evenings our favourite places were Mikes and The Wave we also ate more than once at Estia and The Maleme Tavern with no complaints. The only place we did not return to was Passama, it looks really nice and traditional but unfortunately the food was not up to much, (in our opinion).
We found the prices to be very reasonable; we met some lovely friendly people, had a fabulous relaxing holiday and will definitely return.
Flight home was fine, just a short delay, not keen on using Kosmar again but if it was the only way to return to Maleme Mare we will do.

We have been to this particular hotel now about 5 times and each time the rooms were cleaned regularly and beds changed twice a week. Staff very friendly and willing to assist if needed. 10 minute walk from local shops and only 2 mins to several excellent tavernas besides having their own on site. Beach on opposite side of road besides having a pool on site.

Local people are very friendly and obliging.

If I were to criticise the hotel at all it would be that on one occasion we stayed it was the last week of the season and whilst sitting out on the balcony during the latter part of the week staff were removing light bulbs and generally closing up for the winter around us and turned off the filter in the pool making it unusable.

Overall a very relaxing holiday and excellent value for money.

Booked as a last minute holiday and didn't expect much but the studios and hotel exceeded our expectations. Rooms spacious with all facilities required. Pleasantly surprised by large bath towels, daily cleaning ( except Sunday), hair dryer in bathroom, full sized fridge etc. Internet access, clean pools, pool table, table tennis and across the road from the beach. Very short walking distance to other tavernas and bars in a safe, chilled out area. On site bar and taverna excellent value and staff helpful and friendly. Our teenagers and eleven year old loved it. Would go again.
