Sorry for the essay, I have included headings so you can skip through!
TRANSFER - We arrived at the Stamatis Apartments in San Stefanos after a smooth and uneventful flight and transfer. The transfer stated on the Thomson website is 2h30, this must be a worst case as it took us less that 1h30 to get there. We had no rep on the transfer and were basically dropped off at the front of the apartments and had to make our own way in to find the owner (there is no reception). The hotels bar is on the roadside, behind that is a reasonable size pool with a diving board, a small slide and a shallow pool that has railings between it and the big pool. We were shown to our room by the bar man who carried my girlfriends case which was nice.
THE POOL - As we arrived mid afternoon we quickly got changed and went to the pool. A quick note about the pool, two in fact: 1. the paint in the pool was coming off, leading to blue legs, hands and swimwear resulting in me looking like a smurf! 2. The pool (and many others in the area) are all public with the owners asking that you buy drinks etc there. We found ourselves at the Athina Hotels pool for the majority of our stay - which is a gorgeous looking hotel! The main negative point is that the Thomson website states "These apartments are adult focussed - we won't accept bookings for under 16s" whereas in reality there could potentially be children from other hotels / locals so don’t go expecting an adult only pool!
THE BEACH - is 5 mins walk away, if that - across the road and through the Hotel Athina's pool area. The beach isn’t very deep but goes quite a way around the coast with (apparently ;) ) a nudist bit further up. You also walk past a quad bike hire place here are the prices for 1/3/7 days (as I was looking for this info before I left)
Moped: 15/43/95 euro
Buggy: 25/70/140 euro
Quad: 20/60/135 euro
Pushbike: 5/13/25 euro
THE APARTMENT was very basic as you'd expect in Greece. We were very disappointed in our accommodation, the room was extremely dated. [Side note: I am not one of these people who expect the earth out of places, I go camping a bit and have stayed in 10euro per night hostels etc]. The problems we had mainly were to do with the bathroom, we had an awful smell that seemed to come from the drains on the shower and a drain on the floor. So that every time someone in ANY apartment used a tap, flushed the toilet or had a shower we got an awful smell in our bathroom. We met a pair of girls in the adjacent apartment who had the same issues. On complaining to the rep she had the owner come out and do something (don’t know what) which didn’t alter the problem, complained again with the same action and result. As we basically only slept and showered in our room we put up with it as each complaint took at least a day to get action. We didn’t use any of the kitchen equipment but you got a worktop oven with a hob on top, a toaster and kettle with the usual plates and cutlery - something that we had to wash upon arrival! On the other hand some people we spoke to in another block (there’s 3 blocks of 4 apartments) said their room was great - I assume the other excellent reviews were from people stopping in those rooms. For info we were in room 6, room 5 was the room also with problems. Other issues include: our bathroom window wouldn’t lock potentially allowing someone to get in, shower curtain not fitted righ and water went everywhere and unsafe looking wires going to the light in the kitchen - but the bathroom smell was the main one.
AIR CON was separate and cost 5 euro a day, a must for July.
OVERALL, Other than the problems mentioned with the room we had a great holiday. Food was great and not too expensive (8 euro for a main meal, 2 for a pint lager / glass of wine, 3-4 for a starter) I recommend Zorbas about 50m down the road - they have dancing on every half hour or so. There are enough restaurants / bars to keep you going for a week / maybe just for 2 weeks. San Stefanos is a very quiet resort; don’t go looking for clubs although 16euro will get a taxi to Sidari for that sort of thing.

Arrived on 4th may 2010 at 3am! -first day of the season. We were greeted and taken to our room by Eliosus-the nephew of Tom the owner.
Our room was a bit on he small side but kept spotlessly clean by the maid who we saw most days. The room overlooked the large pool and we could also see the sea between buildings. The apartments are in a good central locationwith a large pool loads of sunbeds and a reasonably priced snack bar for lunch. The vegetarian sandwich became a favorite - a roll with cheese tomato cucumber and CHIPS!!!! for 2.5E
it was very quiet in the whole resort but enough Tavernas to try. We did not have a bad meal in the whole fortnight but particularly enjoyed the 2 Stars both from a food and hospitality aspect. The stefado and stamna were superb! The prices for eating out were reasonable although we found the supermarket expensive. Gone are the days of the cheap Metaxa and Ouzo- stick to wine or beer thats the best deal The resort has kept some of its greek charm although most of the visitors are British. We walked over the cliffs to Arillas -about 45mins-nice walk if not too hot-remember the water!

Visited San Stefanos and stayed at the Stamatis. We were greeted by Tom the owner, when we arrived at 10.30pm. The apartments are clean and huge, lots of space and room cupboards. The Pool was very quiet, but very clean and big. Tom the owner had said that this year had been quiet due to the Recession. The Resort is very small and not alot going on, various food places and a couple of bars. No Nightlife, so if you're looking for partying, forget it. I would describe this resort as 'Chill Out time', time to read and sunbathe, the resort is very quiet, but nice. The beach is clean and water is clear. Would visit again if need stress free holiday. Only downfall is an 1.5 hr to Resort from Airport, and also a very scary coach ride, but scenic !!

STAMATIS Apartments.
« on: September 01, 2008, 07:36:49 PM »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our first visit to these apartments and it won't be our last. We had one of the 2 groundfloor apartments with a smallish patio facing the pool. The apartment was one of the studio ones and must be the smallest studio we have ever stayed in.

There was a small entance/kitchen equipped with a small table and 2 chairs. Surprisingly this room had more than adequate cupboard space and for space utilisation was exceptional. We had use of a toaster, kettle and mini oven with 2 electric rings and a good sized fridge.
The WC had a sink with light, mirror and cupboard space. Again good use of available space to include storage. There was obviously a toilet and the standard Greek shower tray. We were shocked to see the shower curtain stopped a good 2ft from the tray. We found it hard to believe but we genuinely had less of a flooding problem than with a full length curtain.

The sleeping area comprised of 2 singles, a single bedside cabinet between the beds, a dressing table and chair. In the corner was a built in wardrobe with generous hanging space and a good sized shelf area.

The downside was that if the dressing table was in use any rights of passage were blocked off. If the wardrobe was open the patio doors had to be shut and vice versa.

On the upside, the beds were the most comfortable we have ever had on holiday. We both like 2 pillows. Ask about this and they were provided almost before we had finished asking. The room was cleaned to a very high standard, Congratulations to the young lady who shone at this task.

The position of the apartments was excellent. Our patio door was about 20 metres from the pool which must have been near 30 metres in length. Then there was the inside bar area and a fair sized seating are before you reach the road. Within 30 metres of there you could visit the resorts largest supermarke, see the Doctor, visit the Sidari Travel office (free safety deposit boxes), buy gyros, visit a bar and hire motorbikes. The path to the Athina and thus the beach was right across the road. All this so close and the apartments set so well back they were amazingly quiet.

The staff were excellent. Nothing was too much trouble for the owner Tom or his ever willing barperson, Mike.

The apartments are available through Thomson. There are however some recently opened apartments that Tom lets privately. We had a look at these and they are massive. They had the normal kitchen features but with the added bonus of elbow room. The WC had the advantage of a bath with overhead shower thus eliminating the usual bathroom flooding. In the living area were 2 beds and generous wardrobe/storage space. There were also a chair and sofa that unfolded to make beds for a further 3 guests. The front was a large balcony with table and chairs. The beauty of the balcony was the views. A glance to the left showed the hills leading to Arilas and dead ahead was a good vista of sea and neighbouring islands. I believe the going rate for these rooms was €50 per night. Not the cheapest but in all honesty exceptional rooms.

This was our second time to the in San Stefanos and the Stamatis apartments. The second time because the primary objective of our June holiday is rest and relaxation and these apartments provide it. This is wholly due to the size of the pool and the lack of people around it. San Stefanos is very quiet in June which means you have the run of the pool in most hotels and guaranteed tables in restaurants. The pool is impressive and worth a return trip (although the pool is owned by the Silver Moon bar which is at the opposite end of the apartments. Therefore, you will get the occasional Greek kid coming to try out his best dives.

If the pool wasn't so big and empty of people, i may not return to the Stamatis apartments. Our air conditioning bill came to almost a quarter of our total holiday bill (for two for a week) and this was a rather poor unit which at time blew out hot air.

Also the maid service, so good on our first trip, had descended to a thrice weekly visit to make the bed a replace towels. In addition we were expected to purchase our own toilet paper.

The owner/bartender is not the friendly Greek you will find all around San Stefanos but a rather grumpy and stern man. Our itme with him was limited but it would have been nice to have been welcomed a little more openly.

San Stefanos is a great place to relax and the Stamatis apartments are a good, reasonably cheap, option with the beefits already mentioned. However don't expect any extras or even some may basics that you might expect elsewhere.
