“Excellent hotel lacking a slight bit of comfort”
Reviewed 27 September 2011

Greek hotels are basic! Typically square rooms, hard beds, somewhere for the suitcase and a shower can be enough for a hotel to rise the ranks on Trip Advisor.

How does the Sands fair and does it deserve the high praise?

On the whole very good. Its a lovely small friendly hotel on the edge of Nidri, requiring just a short walk to the taverns and shops.

The rooms do lack the comforts that perhaps a first time visitor to Greece would expect, examples:
- The bed was hard.
- The room didn't offer an armchair to relax in.
- The shower did have to be held by hand above your head etc.
- The balconies are shared; ours had one table and two chairs for three rooms, another words one couple could use it at a time. Accordingly we didn't use them much.

However this is Greece, I opened my review explaining what the standard is in Greece. I wasn't expecting much else in this department.

So why the great reviews of this hotel?

The hotel is kept spotless.
Its ran by an enthusiastic, hard working friendly host who will have a bit of banter and spend the time - if you wish, or leave you to enjoy the sun otherwise.
The food on offer at the hotel while basic (don't expect any Lamb Kleftico etc), is superbly cooked.
The BBQ night is absolutely excellent - even if you're vegetarian - again superb food, good music and a host thoroughly having a good time.
The bar prices are reasonable even with the strong euro... 2.80 euros for a 500 ml bottle of Amstel.
It’s close to the beach.

Have no concerns booking this hotel. Its one of the best on the Island within this budget range. The rooms are basic - we apparently got one of the smaller box style rooms - but the host, cleanliness and other facilities excel this hotel above the rest - it deserves to be #1.

Just got back from the sands, great location on the edge of nidri a short walk to the centre, great value for money, nice for a two star, kept clean, beds were hard though and we were placed in the smallest room, more like a broom cupboard, room 101, However all other rooms were nice enough we were just unlucky to have this room, would go bac again But in a different room, apart from this no complaints

The Hotel

Lovely clean accommodation in a good location. After reading all the good reviews of this hotel, I was looking forward to my holiday at The Sands and wasn't disappointed. On an evening arrival we walked into the hotel, past the lovely lit swimming pool and into the main reception where we were welcomed by the owner Laertis. He gave the key to our room and we paid 45 euros for the air conditioning - expensive, but is the norm for 2/3 star accommodation I have stayed in Greece. The safety deposit box was 10 euros which was refundable at the end of our stay. It was not in your room but kept in a double locked unit in reception and Laertis held the key. The rooms are very clean with a surprisingly clean bathroom for Greece (no smell). The usual little trough for a shower with pull around curtain and powerful handheld shower. The kitchen unit and utensils were adequate for us as we did not intend doing any cooking - two ring cooker, 1 saucepan, 2 plates and enough knifes, forks, spoons, plates and bowls. The bed was really comfy and sheets were cleaned once while we stayed. Laertis seems to run the whole place on his own. We ate at the hotel each lunchtime (cooked by Laertis) which was very nice, although chips are served with everything. The bbq was great, which cost 18 euros with lovely food (cooked by Laertis again), probably the best meal we had the whole holiday. This is a great time to mingle with all the other guests staying and to have a dance (if you want) with Laertis around a ring of fire. The pool area is clean and there was just one day when we got up slightly later and did not get a sunbed so went to the beach across the road where two sunbeds and an umbrella cost 5 euros. The beach is small (more of a bank than a beach) but pleasant as you can watch the boats come and go and lay in front of the beach bar, have a drink and enjoy free WIFI.

Nidri

Nidri itself is very man made. You will not find any historic sites, buildings or steep cobble streets associated with Greece. It consists of two main streets - one with the usual tacky gift shops, supermarkets and a few bars and restaurants. (now closed off to cars) The other is the road on the port where you will find many bars and tavernas, all of which appear to have the same menu (apart from a couple of Italian restaurants and a Chinese). We tried a different restaurant each night but I can't say that we had a excellent meal in any - it was just OK. The service in every restaurant and bar was absolutely terrible. You feel you have been sitting there all night - there is absolutely no rush to serve you at all, which we found very frustrating! There are 3 large boats that sit in the harbour which take you over to smaller islands and a large ferry which take you to Meganissi.

We went on the Sunset and Stars boat trip where you sailed over to a moonlit beach (bank) on the mainland, had a very nice bbq and laid back on a beach mat and looked up at the bright stars, were shown the constellations and told Greek myths. Discovering the constellations was very interesting, but found the stories and myths did go on a bit, although I would recommend this lovely evening.

The Flight

After reading the many forum posts about Torair, I must say I have never been so worried about taking a flight. The plane going was absolutely fine. The crew were helpful and although you could tell the plane was old, it was not as shabby as I was lead to believe by the forums. The take off and landing were smooth. On the other hand, the plane home was not quite as good. I felt very nervous, partly due to the fact that the family in the next isle were all holding hands praying and the man in front of me was sweating and shaking!!! The back of the seat in front of me was ripped, the vinyl was coming off all the arm rests and if I leant back too hard on my seat it would fall back a little. No headphone socket or TV's. We were at the back of the plane near the smell of the toilets. We had paid to have a meal on the flight both ways and were let down twice when they did not have enough meals for everyone and did not have pudding, rolls, cheese, where given a horrible vegetarian curry and a Satsuma for a pudding! Apart from this, the flight was a good one, again with a smooth take off and landing. I will not book with Olympic next year if they are still using Torair (not unless they get newer planes).

All in all we had a very nice weeks holiday. If staying for two weeks I think I would have been rather bored and would recommend hiring a car to explore other parts as there is not too much to see or do in Nidri (other than relax that is).

Thank to Laertis who works ever so hard and whose hotel is lovely!

We have just returned from the Sands hotel in Nidri, and cant praise Laertis and his cleaning staff high enough. From the moment we went in to the hotel on the first day Laertis couldn't do enough. The room was very clean and the beds extremely comfortable. It is a two star accommodation but it doesn't feel like it. Laertis works from early in the morning until early morning the next day and is always on hand to help with information of to serve drinks and food.
Talking of food you must go to the Barbecue Evening that is held at the poolside every Tuesday. The food is excellent and there is plenty to eat, just give Laertis your preference from the barbecue and it will be served up on the night. Plenty of people who went to the barbecue the first week had such a good time that they went back the second week for more.
After the unhurried food the shots come out (courtesy of Laertis) and the Greek music gets everyone in the mood to try some Greek dancing and of course Laertis is only to happy to lead the dancing and get people up and show them how to do it. All in all it is a fun night and it does not disrupt the hotel in any way and if you don't want to join it that is fine, but you would miss out on a good night.
You can spend your days lasing around the pool where all your food and drink needs are catered for, or you can wander to the many tavernas just a short walk from the hotel. Location wise the Sands his hard to beat as it is close to all the amenities that Nidri has to offer, yet just far enough away to be away from it all.
All in all an excellent holiday and we will definately go back.
