My wife and I stayed at the Hydra Hotel from the 13th to the 15th September 2016.

Accommodation
We stayed in a “harbour view” room (Room 201). The view from the room was excellent, one window overlooking the harbour and two overlooking the town. The windows were set deeply enough into the walls to sit on the inside window shelf and enjoy the view. The room was furnished to a high standard in a traditional style and had a bedroom, sitting room, kitchenette, en-suite and private terrace. The rooms have built in wardrobes, air con, tv, desk, sofa, a fridge, sink, cooking area, safe and iron and ironing board. A nice touch was the dimmable lighting to take in the view over the town at night. This particular room also had a private terraced area to enjoy breakfast. For our stay we had everything we needed and enjoyed the creature comforts. Our room also had excellent wifi access.

Hotel
The hotel is based in a traditional Hydra style house. The room character is consistent with this. The hotel is based a short walk away from the harbour. It is located up some steep steps so luggage transfer by donkey is recommended. Access via the steps and winding alleys adds to the charm. There is also a convenient short cut to the swimming areas local to Hydra town and Sunset restaurant. The common areas in the hotel are finished to a high standard.

Breakfast / Refreshments
Breakfast is served to your room each morning. It is a traditional Greek breakfast of yoghurts, bread, eggs, fruit etc. The breakfast was varied each day, delivered very quick and was a good portion. ON the last day we also enjoyed some traditional Greek preserved spoon fruits. The quality was excellent and taking breakfast on the terrace was something we enjoyed everyday.

There is no bar in the hotel however there is supply of some items kept in the hotel so a cold beer was always available immediately. The hotel provides free delivery from the local supermarket as well for whatever items are required.

Services
We were warmly and personally welcomed by name when we arrived by the assistant manager, Dimosthenis. He was very friendly and attentive throughout our stay. This included a useful introduction to the area at the start of our stay. All our room service and breakfast was always delivered very quickly.

We had an excellent two nights in Hydra Hotel, it was exactly the pampered experience we were looking for and definitely intend to return sometime in the future.

Room Tip: Room 201 has views of the harbour and the town.

This hotel is in a quiet location. The manager is extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfast is excellent. There are lots of things to do on the island. Restaurants are within easy walking distance.

We arrived mid evening and were met at the harbour by Marios and his donkey who carried our cases - it is a steep climb to the hotel! Katerina and Dimos were there to greet us and they allocated us to a very spacious and comfortable suite. You couldn't have wishes for a warmer welcome. They also arranged a table for us at a superb restaurant nearby. Breakfast, which we chose to take in the attractive courtyard each day, was outstanding and Demos clearly took delight in ensuring that his guests were happy. There were lots of lovely little touches and "surprises" each morning. Demos knows the Hydra well and was full of invaluable bits of advice which helped us as we explored each day. We cannot fault any aspect of this superbly run hotel.

Room Tip: The rooms on the front have good views and one room has a verandah.

The attention to detail was wonderful, the views spectacular and well worth the 140 steps, or more if like us you get lost and take a different route every time!!!
In June we stayed on the first floor corner apartment and it was beautiful for a friends wedding and I cannot fault the hotel in any way. The attentive owner noticed we had eaten all of the Greek yogurt with breakfast and without being asked he gave us extra the next morning, I mentioned one of the jams was delicious and again there was extra the next day. It's the little things that make a difference and I have stayed in some fab hotels in major cities this was one of the best.

Room Tip: Choose the Corner room on the first floor with its own private patio if you have the choice

This was our fourth trip to Hydra, the last being twelve years ago, before the much publicised economic troubles. Luckily for us the Island was still the peaceful haven we had remembered. It's sparkling beauty hits you the moment you disembark from the Cat., sadly no ferry crossing this time (one of the results of the recession maybe?) which we loved in the past. Hotel Hydra is 140 steps up above the harbour so Marios was awaiting us with his donkey to transport our luggage ( arranged for us by the Hotel). We were warmly greeted by the Hotel's manager ,Dimos, offered a cooling drink & then shown to our room, which was clean, spacious (compared to the Hotel room we had stayed in on previous visits) & had wonderful views. The highlight of our stay was the delicious breakfast, served in the courtyard garden (or in your room if you chose that option), wonderful yoghurt, loads of fresh fruit, local honey & preserves , quirky Greek salads, cheese/spinach pies & sometimes cake, fruit juice & as much coffee as required. No two breakfasts were the same.Nothing was too much trouble for the manager, anything we asked for (a full length mirror in my case!) was supplied. We also met the charming manager of the sister ( brother??) Hotel , Hotel Hydrea , and invited to look around it. This Hotel is much grander & is right down on the Harbour (better for anyone with mobility issues). It is exquisite & with Katerina in charge will, i know, deliver on all fronts.
