“the wonderful alkyon hotel and my fantastic holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 October 2011

People who are writing negatives things about this hotel need to get a grip. There was nothing wrong with this hotel. The staff were all very friendly, it was clean, the rooms were fine. It wasn't a 5*star flash hotel, but there are more important things, like the fantastic location and the amazing island with its 66 beaches, friendly people and superb weather. If you want a 5*star flashy accommodation, you might want to stop and consider the cost to the environment, the planet and the local people. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, unless they are selfish, self-absorbed townies, but then I wouldn't openly be friends with people like that anyway :)) happy holidays!

Room Tip: rooms over-looking the sea were very nice

My husband insisted on booking this hotel as we were taking our grandson - making this the 3rd generation of our family to stay at the Alkyon. We had a side-sea view and the room (308) was fine. A pity there are no tea/coffee making facilities though. As in other reviews the bathroom desperately needs refurbishing, not least because the lime green bath is stained from the ever flowing shower !
Yes the location is fantastic, although the traffic in the evening is diverted round the side of the hotel which makes it very noisy until the early hours. We did get used to it though.
The view at breakfast is wonderful and takes your mind off the boring bland breakfast.
Parts of the hotel have been refurbished - take a look at the public toilets, down the steps from reception. They are excellent and have hairdryers ! (I forgot to take mine and none are available for the rooms.)
Most of the staff in the hotel were helpful and the lady responsible for our room did an excellent job, despite the tatty linen and towels.
A holiday in Skiathos is becoming an expensive option, but we did have a great time. Maybe a full refurb of this hotel would place it beyond our pocket, but in its current condition it isn't a cheap option now.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor with a side-sea view. Take a hairdryer and coffee making kit

We have just returned from our third visit to the Alkyon in six years from the 16th to the 30th September. We knew what to expect in terms of standard of rooms from our previous visits and reviews on Trip Advisor but the location of the Alkyon i fantastic and in some ways makes up for the basic amenities provided so were happy to put up with the basics but the room we were allocated this time was the worst ever. Room 221was located on the ground floor at the back corner of the hotel.
The walk to the room was like being down a mine it was so dark, there were lights but they were not switched on. the room was so dark you needed the lights on all the time even with the doors open as there was a large tree outside the balcony blocking the light and the view of the building site opposite.
The room was clean and tidy as we had expected from our previous stays but the bathroom was beyond belief. The bath was old and rusty and the shower head was a joke, it was connected to the tap by a piece of rubber hose it would not stay in place on the wall and leaked water all over the place when turned on which didn't matter much as there was no hot water to shower with anyway.
I reported this to reception and was told there had been a problem with the hot water and there would be hot water shortly and the shower head would be fixed as soon as possible. The water did heat up eventually but was very hit and miss and we spent the first week of our stay hoping for hot water which we only had occaisionlly despite complaining several times to reception. The shower head remained the same for the rest of our stay in room 221. I dread to think what room 101 was like.
At the end of our first week we were asked to change rooms as they wanted to close down the part of the hotel were were staying in. Not suprised really and were offered a room with a sea view and asked if we wanted to look at the room.
Room 206 was shown to us and after checking out the bathroom first we snapped the receptionists hand off and were out of room 221 as fast as we could go. Room 206 was much better with a nice modern bathroom with a shower that you could use and plenty of hot water so the second week of our stay was much better.
Breakfast was not as good as on previous stays and with little choice gets boring after the first week but the views from the breakfast terrace and balcony are the best on the island. There is no need to go hungry as there is plenty of food and breakfast was served from 07:30 to 10:00 every morning.
The Alkyon has a lot going for it, in terns of the location but is let down by the very poor standards of the rooms and corridors and needs a lot doing to make them more modern and presentable. Its looking very tired from the outside too and is in need of some repairs and a face lift.
The maid service is excellent and the rooms cleaned every day but the sheets and towels are old and ragged although always clean.
The breakfast was dissapointing this time and although there was plenty to eat there was less choice than on our previous visits.
We will be going back to Skiathos but not to the Alkyon, its time to move on and find somewhere with modern facilities and interesting breakfast. We will however be keeping an eye on the reviews posted on Trip Advisor and when all is well and the comments improove perhaps we will go back the the Alkyon.

Room Tip: Go for a room with a sea view or side sea view on an upper flooras these seem to have the best facil...

Great location, views to die for. We've recently returned from our 11th visit to the Alkyon.

Yes,it needs some updating to guest rooms - particularly bathrooms, but on a more positive view we notice small improvements each year. This year new air con system throughout the hotel - including guest rooms. Little things, yes, but it is a move in the right direction.

As to staff,we've always found them very friendly and helpful - maybe they treat guests as they are treated by guests.

We will be returning next year (sounds like we may be on our own!!)

I used this hotel for one night before crossing over to Volos.I have stayed before. Its well located for the port and airport. I paid 63 euros for a double room for single use. This is not a 5 star hotel but a Greek 3 star hotel and the price reflects this.

I had asked and was given a room on a high floor, I had a side sea view. The room had been refurbished, the bathroom had not.

The pool area is pleasant,

Breakfast is taken overlooking the sea - the view must be one of the best in the world. I found cake, coffee, Greek yogert and honey for my breakfast.

Reception were helpful.

I would use this hotel again

Room Tip: Choose a room on a higher floor

We have stayed at the Alkyon 3 times over the last 7 years, and I agree with other coments that th erooms do need refurbishment, well, no......the bathrooms do. The main room we had was clean, tidy, spacious (room 322), flat screen tv, aircon (other reviewers forget you never even used to get aircon at the Alkyon!!!!) the pool is great, especially for the great location so close to the cosmopolitan, buzzing town, the bar is nice, the staff were very pleasant to us at all times and helpful. Interestingly the price hasn't actually changed in 7 years (add on inflation etc, costs of living going up, worsening of Pound v Euro) and you might therefore assume that the 'class' of this hotel has actualy reduced - people forget what they get for their pound has reduced these days. They expect too much.
Anyway, the bathrooms are the same as they were 7 years ago, so I agree there, Alkyon - Do something about it because there are alot of loyal customers out there!!!.
All in all apart from the bathrooms this is still a good hotel, with a good bar,and good pool in a great location - just needs a bit of brining into the 21st century

Room Tip: Try rooms with 300 range, or 400.
