“great value with a few drawbacks”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2010

Arhus is a problem town for hotels if you have a travel budget, but Hotel Ferdinand offers a good value alternative. I paid the same price as the Ritz or Scandic, but instead of a small twin room had an enormous and attractive suite with good furniture comfortable beds and a large walk in shower.
Downstairs is a good if pricey brasserie, and there is plenty of choice nearby as the hotel is in the midle of the Aarhus restaurant and cafe area.
Two drawbacks, street noise from late night revellers and early morning dustbin collection/street cleaning (bring earlpugs to Aarhus, many hotels have this problem), and a strange cabbage smell in the bathroom (weak eco friendly toliet cleaner could be the culprit- they should blast it with bleach!)

This hotel is owned by a well known danish footballer, so we figured that it would be a beautiful hotel but there were no reviews on Trip Advisor about this hotel so we took a risk and booked ourselves in.

It is situated right on the canal in the hub of Aarhus's cafes, stores and nightlife, the area was bubbling with activity when we arrived.

We had notified staff that we weren't arriving till midnight and the manager very kindly had organised homemade sandwiches and whipped up a special dessert - absolutely superb service. We couldn't fault his service, he treat us as one would imagine royalty to be treated but that unfortunately was the only positive of this hotel.

We took the lift upstairs which had a rather pungent smell to it complete with old crusty stains. We entered the room and it was rather charming until you took a closer look. The bedspread was covered in...how can one say without it being offensive, let's just say body fluids from a male. The beds sheets had not been changed and were pretty unpleasant, and there was one pillow between two of us.

The toilet had been used prior to our visit and was very unclean, not really wanting to go into too much detail on this!

The hotel was not air conditioned and it was very hot and stuffy, you couldn't open the windows as the drunken revellers outside were very noisy and the noise didn't subside until 4.30am the following morning.

However it was with huge regret that we checked out early as the manager had been so amazing to us, he was mortified that our hotel room was so unclean and discounted us accordingly.

If they get their cleaning staff sorted out and perhaps invest in fans or air conditioning then this would be one superb hotel, the location is absolutely brilliant.

However we ended up at the Radisson hotel instead and will write a review on this but can confirm the Radisson was super clean and quiet (and cheaper than Hotel Philip) :)

  • Liked — The service
  • Disliked — It was filthy, hot and noisy.
  • Tips/Secrets — Check to see if their cleaners have been changed over, and whether it is hot or not.
