If you're looking for a restaurant serving authentic Danish cuisine, you can't do better than Amalie. Located just a block from Amalienborg Palace, home of the Danish royal family, Amalie was recommended by a neighbor and possible friend of the Queen. You couldn't ask for a more authentic Danish restaurant frequented by wealthy locals who live in the area.

Amalie is only open for lunch (hours 11:00-4:00) The restaurant is small, so reservations are highly recommended. Herring and salmon are specialties of the house and if you do go there, don't forget to sample the Danish aquavit. Several different types are on the menu. There's nothing like a shot of ice cold schnapps in the morning to start your day with a bang! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

We discovered Restaurant Amalie completely by accident when looking for a lunch venue to follow our trip to see the changing of the guard at Amalienborg Palace. The restaurant is situated only about 100 metres from the palace on Amaliegade.
The weather was very wet on the day that we visited and so we cut short our viewing of the guards to go to the restaurant. This was a fortuitous decision, as it meant that we arrived shortly before 12.15 while the restaurant was quiet.
We were particularly interested in the traditional Danish meals shown on the menu. The waitresses realised that we were not completely familiar with Danish cuisine and drinks, but they pleasantly advised us about the various dishes and on the way that they should be eaten to achieve the best culinary experience.
We eventually decided on a Herring starter, which we shared, followed by Danish meatballs, and all of the food was of a very high standard.
Even as the restaurant quickly filled up with more rain-soaked customers, the waitress kindly took time out to take a couple of photos for us.
In all, it was a very pleasant experience and we would love to visit again one day.

Nice restaurant. It is reasonably priced, however, the portion is quite small. Great taste. The staffs are friendly with great service mind.

For my wife and I it is a MUST whenever we are in Copenhagen. The restaurant is in a lovely part of town but away from the busy center and still so close. The owners are so delightful without breathing down your neck but always there when you need their help. The food is Danish at its best that from a Dane means something. you will find that a lot of the locals have their lunch there and I dont know how they can go back to work after all the lovely food, beer and snaps they enjoyed. Dont tell anyone of this charming place.
