Built on island in a lake (moat) this is a very pleasant well maintained castle. Well worth the train ride to get to the site in other words not a quick place to see but you will enjoy the effort.

This castle is my absolute favorite!! That’s about all I have to say about it. Make sure you have good walking shoes on because it is rather large. The garden is STUNNING. (If you’re fascinated by garden arts) I could go back countless times to this place. Definitely worth the travel outside of Copenhagen! It takes a bit of time to get there but you won’t be disappointed.

Not to be confused with FrederiksbErg in Copenhagen near the zoo, this is a 40-min direct train ride from Copenhagen (we travelled from Nørreport) to Hillerød. We got a bus outside the train station (included in the 130DKK 24-hour ticket) although it is walkable. The castle is awe-inspiring, we would have lingered longer outside but it was freezing! All staff were friendly, helpful and with good humour. Free audio guide which was very useful. Free lockers. One staff member recommended I keep my coat on as some parts are very cold - good advice! She also provided us with a torch as some areas are dark and it proved useful for seeing the finer detail on paintings and in wood carvings. The castle is crammed with paintings, furniture and objects over 4 floors. The Chapel and Great Hall were my favourites. At 75DKK it was excellent value. We finished off with walk around the lake and into the small town where we warmed up with a hot chocolate at a lovely cafe. Open 11:00-15:00 from Nov-Mar.

The castle is located at Hillerod, about 40km north-west of Copenhagen. We can take a train to reach this place easily. It is a palatial complex and it was the largest renaissance residence in Scandinavia. After a serious fire in 1859, the castle was rebuilt and reopened to the public as the Danish Museum of National History and it contains the largest collection of portrait paintings in Denmark. The castle is so beautiful externally and the interior is also meticulously and luxuriously decorated. The Chapel, the Great Hall and the many collections and displays in each rooms definitely make a visit to this place a must. The big beautiful garden provides another place to spend our time, taking nice beautiful scenery picture with the nice castle at the backdrop. Everything is so nice and pleasing to the eyes, and we definitely enjoy our visit here.
