“Old and Special”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 September 2011

The oldest hotel in Gothenburg is 3 minutes from Central Station and Airport Bus terminal, 5 minutes from theatre, landing stages, 10 minutes from Concert Hall, Theatre, Art Gallery and Park. In other words absolutely prime position. I had single room overlooking courtyard, so quiet that I could have window open - pristine room, only rather small bed was something one could complain about. Superb breakfast, helpful friendly staff, free wi-fi, internet, free coffee, tea and cake all day, two small but pleasant lounges. Reasonable rates for Sweden.

Room Tip: Overlooking courtyard best

Stayed for 4 nights in a standard double room which was smallish, but well laid out and spotless. The reception staff were friendly and exceptionally helpful and the hotel itself is a two minute walk from the centre of things and a 5 min walk from the bus and railway stations. The buffet breakfast was great with plenty of choice and a healthy supply of fresh fruit.
Tips...If coming by bus from the airport, buy your tickets on-line or on the bus. You are charged more if you buy them in the airport....and get yourself a 'GO' city pass which gives entry to most attractions as well as allowing you ticketless bus, tram and ferry travel.
Recommendations: Paddan boat tour of the canal and waterfront...but watch your head!!
Central park...near to the Botanics (also recommended)...the one with the moose!!...and use your pass to visit the Liseberg funfair...if only to soak-up the Atmosphere (it's a ride!) and to appreciate that not all funfairs have to be like the British ones!!
Restaurants...Hello Monkey (Asian fusion) (5 mins from hotel) and sit outside even if it's chilly...the locals do and the restaurants supply blankets!..... and
A must for pizza-lovers...Cyrano on Princegaten....and
For veggies...the Solrosen in Haga (5 min on tram)...very reasonable even with a beer!

Stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in a deluxe suite. Room was very spacious with separate sitting area. Large modern bathroom with robes supplied. Hotel is located in quite side street only a few minutes from centre. Staff are very friendly. We picked this hotel because it appeared to have an individual charm about it - kind of an old fashioned traditional hotel but with modern feel to it if that makes sense. It is sometimes the little things that you remember most like a pleasant smile when you go in and out. There are no in room tea making facilities but hot drinks are always available from reception area - along with homemade cake that sits all too easy on the hips. Breakfast was typical fare but was still pleasant and relaxing - no pushy people here - you know the ones! Very relaxed feel to this hotel which definitely sets it apart from some of the more commercial chains. If you want box modern this hotel is not for you but if you want to try something a little bit more homely give it a try. The hotel asks you to leave your room key at reception when you go out which might not suit some but it is part of its traditional charm as well.

We arrived early at the Hotel Royal and first impressions were excellent. Lovely reception, nice quaint old interior, modernised very well and sympathetically. We arrived early but a room was available. The guy on reception was excellent - friendly, courteous and helpful. Our room (250) was impeccably clean, not the biggest room, but big enough. View from the room wasn't great - it was on the street side opposite a sex shop! But this really wasn't a problem, I didn't see one person go in all weekend, and it didn't feel remotely seedy as you would imagine. Whilst the street was quiet, for a good nights' sleep we didn't open the windows as we weren't sure how loud it was going to get. But without air con, the room was a bit warm at night. Downsides to the room - no wardrobe, only a small racked area with an iron, ironing board etc all on show with no door, no bedside cabinets only a table on one side only and not full sized pillows, just two small square ones. room plus sides: very clean, neat, well maintained, stylish interior, very comfy massive bed, nice lighting, brilliant shower. Room was very quiet with no noise in the corridor or other rooms. Breakfast was okay if you like cold savoury buffets - cold ham, salami, cheese etc. There were also lots of types of bread and pancakes, but pastries, croissants etc and yoghurts would have been good. A few nice touches in the reception include a shoe shiner, brollies, blankets, ipads in the wall, magazines and a noticeboard with the weather on and tips from guests on where to eat. Also home made cakes are served along with coffee (just help yourself). We needed a slightly earlier breakfast to catch the flight which was no problem. Check out was quick and easy and all staff we encountered were excellent. I was debating between this and the Radisson Blu and I'm so glad I chose the Hotel Royal, so much better than staying in a big faceless hotel chain and I would definitely stay here again. Drops a star from me for the room view and breakfast choice. Hotel wasn't cheap at £300 for two nights' stay, but this seems to be the going rate in Gothenburg unless you want to stay out of town or in a dump. We wanted neither, so the location and hotel quality was worth it.

Location of hotel was excellent, a two minute walk from the bars, the canal on both sides just a minute's walk. Close to the shops and bus terminal too (but not too close, another advantage of not staying at the Hotel G and Radisson Blu which were near all the trams and buses).

Slight warning on drinks prices - I knew Sweden was going to be expensive, but not as expensive as it was. Cheapest price for a 16cl glass of wine was 59SEK (about £5.90) and the most expensive 149SEK (about £14.90!) Beer was about £6 for a 0.4l glass of draught.

Room Tip: A courtyward facing room may be better if you want the windows open.

Stayed here for one night. Old building and old style decoration but charming and full of lovely touches and details. Small but lovely lounge to relax in with tourist information, 2 iPads on the wall, complimentary coffee and cake. Room was clean and bathroom was modern. Staff very pleasant and helpful. A nice old-fashioned feel to this hotel.
