Owner description: Icelandic Mountain Guides is Iceland's premier adventure tour operator. The company was established in 1994 by four young outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for nature, travel and environmental advocacy. These pioneers aimed to introduce the wonders of Icelandic nature to travelers from all over the world. We started by offering Glacier Walks in Skaftafell and later on Solheimajokull glacier. Hiking, backpacking and other adventures and expeditions in Iceland and Greenland soon followed. Today, Icelandic Mountain Guides offers adventure tours ranging from short day tours to longer multi-day expeditions in the great outdoors in both summer and winter. So whether it is the exploration of the icescapes of glaciers and ice caves, crossing of impressive highlands, trekking in the extraordinary rhyolite massifs or hiking in fascinating valleys, our aim is to Make Every Moment an Experience.

We did the Blue Ice Adventure, an easy and short hike at Solheimajokull Glacier! It was fantastic! Our guide Helgi was very funny and helpful and explained every question we had! The crampons keep you on the ice without problems, it was not difficult! I wanted to do a glacier hike at Skaftafell, but we were there when Grimsvotn volcano errupted and we couldn' t continue our route! The next time we will visit Iceland (not IF) we will do a longer glacier hike for sure!

Had a fantastic time up on the glacier by Skaftafell. Was less than 5min drive from Fosshotel Skaftafell to the national park where they drove us to the glacial tongue.

The glacier was black with ash from the recent eruption but was fascinating - the formations, view of the glacial lagoon, 50m crevasses and tunnelling into the glacier for melting ice flows...

Our guide Ivar spoke English better than me, and was so knowledgable. We could ask ANYTHING we were curious about. Absolutely loved him. Also we found out lots about volcanoes because of the recent eruption - the guide thought that the ash might put people off doing the glacier hike but we got the best of both worlds - there are other glaciers to view the brilliant white/blue colours on but we learned so much on our trip.

One of the highlights of the trip, felt safe the whole time and would thoroughly recommend.

ps excellent food available in cafe where we met/finished tour.

We were supposed to go on a multi day trip on the Skafatell Glacier in May 2011. Our trip was canceled due to the volcanic eruptions on the galcier. Despite a 80% refund policy, IMG refunded 100% of our pre paid trip - wonderful customer service.

We booked on the website the Blue Ice Experience and Though we arrived late and with a terrible weather the guide Sigurður was very kind and we did the excursion anyway. Svinafellsjokull is astonishing, one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland. The guide was professional and so nice! Wonderful (blue) experience, Thanks!

I was a little nervous at attempting this hike, but as others have said as long as you have reasonable fitness there's nothing to worry about, you do climb up steeply initially but then it levels off. The crampons make it so easy to walk that there's no worry of slipping. We took the hike with Siggi on 16th Feb on Sólheimajökull Glacier, he was fantastic and i can't emphasise ENOUGH not to try to walk on a glacier on your own. In fact as we started and had just gone 200 yds up the glacier a little girl had ignored advice and gone walking on some snow in a crevasse at the very bottom of the glacier and fallen a few feet down, her screams alerted our guide who ran off to pull her out, and several times on our walk he showed us with the ice axe that what looked like solid ice and snow was in fact a steep drop just covered in a light dusting of snow. Our guide was knowledgeable and gave us a great education about the glacier, how it's formed and moves and retreats, all in such a natural conversational way that it didnt feel at all like this was something he probably does every day. We were in a small group and so had plenty of time to stop for photos, it was a strangely moving experience i found, to leave "normal" life behind and be totally surrounded by the majestic scenery and the power and the danger (potentially!) of the ice. It was humbling. I can't recommend it enough, and when (not if) we go back again, we want to sign up for the longer walks, don't miss it, i think you need to experience this side of Iceland to really understand the Icelanders and their beautiful amazing country of contrasts and landscapes.
