“Cool and modern”
Reviewed 7 April 2012

101 Hotel was a cool place to stay. Even the all dark purple hallways were unexpected, and somehow soothing after that overnight flight. The staff were helpful, even pointing our group to off-the-beaten path attractions in the Golden Circle area. Be sure to visit the small spa in the basement, just the thing after a day of sightseeing. I always sleep with earplugs, so noise was not a problem, but my sleepless friend enjoyed looking at the Harpa concert hall while adjusting to the time difference.

Overall the 101 was quite satisfying.
We were a group of 6 who stayed for 4 nights and had 3 rooms, 2 on the 4th floor and 1 on the 5th. 2 of them were overlooking the port and the other one had a vue on the "white wall" despite the request made at booking. needless to say that this vue has no interest what so ever and i recommend that if you book there you really insist on getting the "good" vue.

The hotel bar is THE place to be and therefore gets extremly noisy and crowded every day starting at roughly 4:30/5:00 (the other reason might be that they have a happy hour). The cocktails are average and the wine ok.
The restaurant (located in the bar) serves an international menu with a tendency for european and asian dishes. The burgers are quite tasty but the best are the nachos that you can also order as appetizers.
The real downside is the price, everything is just as expensive or even more than it is (for me in Paris) in any other big city.
Bearring in mind that after their crisis iceland saw its money devaluated by 50% i personally didnt expect prices to be so high.

The rooms are average size, i would reckon the bed was a kingsize.
Everything is open spaced - the shower on the bathroom and the bathroom on the bedroom.
The real annoying thing are the toilets that are in a polished glass cubicle stuck on the shower's side and that is really unpleasant.

I recommend you stop at the "spa" where there are 2 tiny steam rooms and a big jacuzzi type pool, it's very relaxing, pretty and there is often nobody around.

The design of the bar/restaurant area and generally of the hotel is modern but rather common.

We stayed for 4 nights here and couldn't have picked a better location. The room was extremely clean and very comfortable. If I had any complaint at all about the room it would be no tea or coffee making facilities. We were on the 4th floor and had a great view across the road to the harbour. All the shops you could need were on the doorstep and we were spoilt for choice when it came to restaurants. The staff were very friendly and incredibly helpful especially the young lady on reception and the woman in the breakfast restaurant. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: The higher you go the less noise you get, quieter at the back but better view from front.

We spent 6 days in the 101 Hotel just after the New Year. Junior Suite, on the 3rd floor - so quiet enough for all nights apart from Saturday. However the judicious purchasing of earplugs ensured a relatively peaceful night - although the baying of the street wolves at 5 am was quite exciting. The room was chic, comfortable and spacious. The bed linens were wonderful, the mattress was not but the really helpful, charming and professional staff changed it immediately we expressed our discomfort. Aveda products, TV, lots of towels and bath robes, great lighting and hi speed wifi. only thing missing was kettle and coffee, but again the staff provided a kettle once we had asked for it.
We had a view of the harbour and the Harpa - the new concert hall lit by a northern lights inspired illumination display
Food in the hotel was good. Delicious lobster, prawns, hamburgers and lamb. Happy hour gave us the chance to drink in the bar, otherwise astronomically expensive, enjoyed the choices of wine on the list. Neat, clean and simply but well-equipped gym.
Very helpful front of house staff, with suggestions for trips, timings, restaurants, directions. Horrid trip from the airport with the fly+ buses driven by grumpy bad drivers - well known for their grumpiness

Room Tip: if you are travelling at the weekend ask for a room on the upper floors. the trade off is, the quie...

The details of the 101 Hotel are great. The rooms are sizable if not huge. The food and bar are modern and interesting but still comfortable. But it is the location that really makes it perfect for a nice long weekend.

Room Tip: corner rooms are great

This hotel has everything you would need - including great people watching in the lobby on the weekends during the evenings. THe front desk staff are helpful and the rooms are big enough. We did not find it to be noisy the way that other reviews did. You can walk everywhere in Reykjavik from the Hotel, including the perfect cafe for breakfast across the street, The Grey Cat. We would stay there again. Our room looked out at Harpa - very beautiful at night.

Room Tip: We had our kids with us and they have us 2 rooms at the end of a hall which did not adjoin, but that...

We spent 28-31 December 2011 here and doubt we could have made a better choice. As first-time visitors to Reykjavik (and Iceland), the central location (central to the old town, that is) of the hotel made it unnecessary to have any transportation of our own. Everything we wanted to see downtown was within walking distance. The Gray Line tours terminal was about a block away, too, and brought us all over.

Our room (505) was a bit small and sparse by American standards, but was very clean, tastefully decorated, well laid-out, and comfortable. We didn't spend a great deal of time in the room, other than sleeping and relaxing a bit, and the room was terrific for those purposes. If you're planning to spend most of your time in the room, though, this might not be the best place to stay. Also, our room wouldn't have been particularly amenable for many or rowdy children.

The bed was very comfortable (pretty firm, but didn't bother my wife, who generally prefers very soft, fluffy mattresses). A few more accessible electrical outlets would have been convenient, but they're there if you look for them. Also, drawer-type storage space is kind of limited, so don't bring too much.

The restaurant at the hotel doesn't look like much, but was surprisingly good. Lunch was average, but breakfast was very nice - fruit, yogurt and fixings, breads and rolls, juices, excellent coffee, and the best scrambled eggs I've ever eaten (I'm not a big scrambled egg fan, but these were really good).

One of the unexpected highlights of our trip was New Year's Eve dinner at the hotel restaurant, which we booked upon arrival. Throughout our trip, we sought out restaurants for a 'better' (than "hotel food") dinner. We were very fortunate that we didn't find an alternative that seemed better. The dinner was a seafood-oriented five course dinner that was one of the better meals I've eaten. What's more, we requested a vegetarian alternative to the meal only about two hours before the pre-planned, fixed menu dinner. Despite how unfair a thing that is to do to a kitchen, they came through with a really excellent five-course vegetarian meal. Coupled with a nice bottle of champagne (the only thing at the hotel that seemed a little pricey to me), it was a truly excellent meal. My compliments to the chef!

One sort of 'intangible' benefit that this hotel has, relative to many other hotels at which we've stayed, is its patient and knowledgeable staff. We asked many odd and specific questions to the desk personnel, the waiters, the bartender, and folks we found walking around. On the rare occasions when the person we asked was stumped, they scrambled to find out the answer and report back. That's an enormous help to travelers.

New Year's Eve in Reykjavik is pretty awesome, too. The whole town is very festive, and fireworks are launched almost constantly from about 8 p.m. until about 3 a.m. Around midnight, of course, they're the most concentrated, and the cathedral (ca. 3/8 mile up the road from the hotel) is a great place to watch them.

101 Hotel was located in a beautiful part of a beautiful town. It was an important part of why we enjoyed our visit so much.

Room Tip: The lobby seemed busy most nights, which would lead me to believe that rooms on the 1st and 2nd floo...
