My family and I had dinner at Cafe Maria. We had crepes, puffin, lobster sandwich, catfish, and daily fish special (one teen had chicken fingers) . All the food was good, even the puffin. The lobster sandwhich was too big and messy to eat with your hands, but it had good flavor and all the fish was fresh. The crepes were on the thick side, but the chicken cury filling was tasty. The service was a bit slow and the prices, like every where in Iceland were high. Overall, given the choices on the Island this is a good place for dinner.

I ate ther 3 days in a row lunch and dinner. No matter what I ordered the staff managed to serve it wrongly. Even a burger was terreble, burned but even though it was burned it was cold. Salad with lobster was ruined as I asked the waiter to serve the sauce on the sid, but it came with sauce anyway. When I returned it, and got a new dish back it was clear that the chef had only rinsed the lobster with water and used it again on the salad. Staff was friendly though, but not professional.

Two members of our group got the puffin special, and both seemed happy with our meals. One other person got a crepe was not pleased with the flavors of the ingredients or the preperation. My cod dish was average. The child with us ordered off the children's menu and her plate of spaghetti was bigger than most of the adult dishes! Our group was mixed on the reviews when we left, but we chose not to go back there for the next meal when the suggestion was made.

We took the 45 minute ferry across to Heimaey and after driving around the island went looking for somewhere to eat. Not many places, pizza, a grillhouse, but then we found Cafe Maria. The staff were friendly, the place was lovely and warm. The meal was excellent, the seafood soup just delicious. Straight up from the harbour, on the left hand side about 2 blocks up.

According to the guidebook, there was supposed to be another restaurant in Heimaey, in the only hotel in town. But that had closed down for good some time ago.
There is a new place called Grillhouse, but we found out about it too late.
All the other places on the island are just junk food places. So Maria was the only place to eat for us. Three times altogether.
The menu is very short, two or three fish dishes, puffin and two meat dishes.
The food was not particularly inspiring, but it was ok.
Service is just awful though. You basically have to physically force the waitresses to come to your table to serve you. They have all perfected the old Communist art of walking through the room without looking at any of the tables lest one of the guests might call them over.
But then again, we got fed. And like I said: there is no alternative. Therefore: yes, do come and eat here.
