We have to agree with some of the past reviews. This is a nice hotel in a beautiful town (and the breakfast buffet was wonderful!), but for the very high rates we would have expected a bit more. The rooms are clean and simple -- perhaps sticking with the theme of being a former convent -- however adding just a few amenties in the room (robes, slippers, laundry bag, bathroom toiletries, etc), perhaps along with turn down service would truly help make this hotel a five-star. Nonetheless, we did enjoy our stay, but would consider other hotels in Durnstein for our next visit.

We were expecting more from a 4 star hotel compared to other places we stayed in Austria. I would not recommend this for travelers looking for pampering, updated facilities, or extra amenities; those who enjoy historical properties chock full of antiques would be more likely to enjoy this hotel. The staff was not particularly friendly. The garden and restaurant were very nice, but in my opinion not worth the price of admission.

We enjoyed our three night stay in the Richard Loewenherz, a quiet haven well located in the middle of attractive Durnstein and a great base for touring the Wachau.

The hotel is a conversion of a former convent and the spacious public areas are crammed with religious and historic art and memorabilia, including the large crucifix which presides over the dining room. There is a large secluded garden with a pool, both somewhat underfurnished. A star attraction is the shaded outdoor dining area overlooking the Danube. Breakfast is an adequate buffet. We thought dinner somewhat heavy, especially the local dishes.

Internet access was poor and slow (dial up!) There is guest car parking.

The staff were pleasant and helpful, although we encountered three errors in two meals, including getting someone else's bill.

Our ‘suite’ (actually, an oversized room) was comfortable and had a marvellous view overlooking the river. The furnishings and equipment, including in the bathroom, were adequate but somewhat ascetic (reflecting the nuns’ continuing influence?).

Overall, we would rate the hotel as four star, although some related services were missing. But we also think that this property has unrealised potential and could attain five star status with a little more investment and effort.

At this time, the top choice in the area is the luxurious and nearby Schloss Dursntein - owned by the same family - but the Richard Lowenherz is a pleasant, low key and less expensive alternative.

for $300 a night, you would expect better than a 13 inch television, no mini bar, a tiny window and an unrenovated bathroom. the location is great though, breakfast good, and there are nice pool and grounds. the restaurant was also pretty good. i would still recommend staying in durnstein overnight as it is such a pleasant place.

We stayed here on our honeymoon after getting married in Vienna. We had a suite with a lovely view and although the rooms are simple they are spotless and nicely furnished. We were also lucky enough to be staying during the wine festival period that was happening at the time in Durnstein. This was a great experience for wine lovers. The most notable thing is that the restaurant at this hotal is truly outstanding with fabulous food and a wonderful veranda. The gardens and pool area are also well kept and very pretty.Highly recomended.

You really can’t beat the location of the Richard Lowenherz hotel right on the Danube river and our room had a direct view of the river and vineyards across the river. The village of Durnstein is beautiful with lots of fun little restaurants and places to wonder including going up to the castle ruins that sit above the town.

The room itself was not good as it was old and rundown. The bed was hard and the TV was tiny – maybe a 13” TV. The hotel is in dire need of serious renovations because it has so much potential with its lovely location. We would likely look elsewhere were we to return to the Danube River region.

It is difficult to beat dinner in the hotel veranda restaurant - great food and local Wachau wine overlooking the Danube with the floodlit castle above. A very relaxing place, with pool in beautiful gardens - everything shuts down in the village by 9 pm so it is eerily quiet at night. Breakfast is OK but in a beautiful dining room. I found the staff very friendly when making the booking and the same when we stayed.

To get there you have to drive to the end of the road in the quaint cobbled village and ease through the mass of day-trippers. The main issue for all these types of hotels is lack of air-conditioning (or even fans), and it can be quite warm at night in the summer. But then that is what kings had to live with.
